Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:
Hellboy in Hell #6 ($2.99) – There are a lot of good comics being published right now. There are even some great ones. But “Hellboy in Hell” is one of the few titles currently being published that I would consider “truly special.” Comics don’t get much more special than Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart just doing their thing on a Hellboy book.
Stray Bullets Killers #3 ($3.50) – Okay, I guess there’s this book too, which should be celebrated for the exact same type of artistic integrity and merit. David Lapham is a wonderfully cerebral architect of sequential art and every issue is a masterclass.
Minimum Wage #5 ($3.50) – I guess it’s a writer/artist edition of ‘Comics Should Be Cheap’ this week. I’m just some ordinary dude, and yet so much about “Minimum Wage” hits so painfully close to home. Makes me think that most everybody who is reading this column could find something to identify with in Bob Fingerman’s tragicomedy.
The Auteur #3 ($3.99) – One part manic satire, another part gross-out comic, “The Auteur” is one of my surprise books of the year. The creators find a comfortable refuge in depravity. Things that should be repellant and repugnant are painfully funny or, at the very least, interesting to look at. I’m not sure I want to see inside Rick Spears or James Callahan’s minds, but I don’t mind looking at their brilliant work one bit.
New 52 Future’s End #2 ($2.99) – And then there’s this. Aw hell, despite it all, I’m having immense fun with “Future’s End” thus far. It’s difficult to not compare it to “52”, but while I don’t think it’s capable of capturing the essential qualities that made that event so much fun to follow, I think they’re doing a good job of mixing some under-appreciated elements of DC Comics and making a story out of it.
Total: $16.97

David Harper’s Picks:
Hellboy in Hell #6 ($2.99) – Hey! Remember this guy? He’s back in a pure Mignola joint. Get some.
Shutter #2 ($3.50) – This book is really great, and if you enjoy artist Leila del Duca’s work, come back tomorrow for a treat.
Starlight #3 ($2.99) – Goran Parlov is an art god, and this book continues to entertain greatly. Not your typical Millar joint either.
New 52: Future’s End #2 ($2.99) – MY WEAKNESS IS STRONG.
Quantum & Woody #10 ($3.99) – While all the books that are on my list are very good (in my opinion), they mostly aren’t much fun. This book? Tons of fun. It’s a must read, truly.
Total: $16.46 – a smaller week, but a good one

Matt’s Picks:
Stray Bullets: Killers #3 ($3.50) – One of the best books on the stands, without a doubt. Every issue continues to escalate and impress.
Starlight #3 ($2.99) – I’ve found I have a surprising amount of affection for this book. Sure, it’s only been 2 issues, but it’s easily Millar’s finest book in some time — and Goran Parlov is just incredible.
Shutter #2 ($3.50) – The first issue was a great debut from two of comics’ hottest talents. Can’t wait to see what happens in the follow-up.
Secret Avengers #3 ($3.99) – Ales Kot. Michael Walsh. Matt Wilson. Sold.
Captain Marvel #3 ($3.99) – My favorite Carol Danvers is back for more under the guidance of Kelly Sue and David Lopez, and it has not missed a beat since its return. I can’t imagine this issue will be any different.
Continued belowHellboy in Hell #6 ($2.99) – Speaking of amazing returns, it’s baaaaaack!
Total: $20.96

Brian’s Picks:
Andre the Giant: Life and Legend ($17.99) – There is nothing better than when the myriad interests we have dovetail nicely into a convenient package, like when Frank Black is on the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World soundtrack. And this week, we have one of my favorite indie creators, Box Brown, taking on one of the most fascinating cultural figures of our time, Andre the Giant, who also happens to be one of my favorite people who ever lived. Brown’s art is understated and expressive, Andre’s story is oversized and fascinating, and the book works on all levels. By the end of the book, you’re considering a life that never quite fit anywhere, and the journey is a sad one, a hilarious one, a frightening one, and an engrossing one. This was released to bookstores last week, but is only making its way into some comic stores this week – you’ll purchase nothing better on Wednesday, trust me.
Total: $17.99

Zach’s Picks
New 52 Futures End #2 ($2.99) – I’m enjoying this series way more than I expected to. The random cast of characters, the time jump hook, Batman Beyond! It’s not even a guilty pleasure, it’s just enjoyable super hero comics.
Green Lantern Corps #31 ($2.99) – The first chapter of “Uprising” in “Green Lantern” #31 really impressed me. The preview for the second chapter looks equally enjoyable. The art team of Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo is sorely underrated.
Justice League United #1 ($3.99) – The first issue of the series (which was actually #0) ranked as my pick of the week, as well as one of the best team books DC has released in quite some time. Please DC, let this one last!
Starlight #3 ($2.99) – I’ve heard this book described as more of a BKV book than a Millar creation. I’ve also head the heavy similarities to Pixar faves like Up. I couldn’t agree more with both, and that’s why I highly recommend you check out this book.
United States of Murder Inc. #1 ($3.99) – I’ll admit, I’m not really a “Powers” fan. However, after blazing through Bendis’ entire “Daredevil” run recently, I’m more than willing to check out and recommend his latest creator owned crime series. I’m already getting excited for next year’s issue!
Total Price: $16.95 – Throw in something fun for the child in your life. That “Bee and Puppycat” #1 looks pretty adorable.

Drew’s Pick:
X #13 (2.99) – It’s an extremely light week for me, but this one book is so exciting, I don’t need any others. It’s non-stop fun, but still smart enough to hold up to scrutiny. Hopefully this one finally delivers on the hints they’ve been dropping about X’s past.
