Comics Should Be Cheap! (5/21/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

East of West #12 ($3.50) – My “All Image Comics” pull list this week actually leaves out 2-3 additional Image books I’ll be picking up. You pretty much can’t go wrong with them this week. I’d be remiss if I didn’t start out with my favorite, however, in “East of West” #12. If last month’s issue was at the level of a simmer, this month’s issue is an exploding powder keg. Not to be missed.

Mercenary Sea #4 ($2.99) – One of the most unique-looking books on the stands right now, featuring Mathew Reynolds’ signature big, cinematic panels, dramatic silhouetting, and a ragtag renegade cast of characters. Kel Symons and Reynolds have a stylish winner on their hands.

Prophet #44 ($3.99) – “Prophet” is right up there with “Hellboy in Hell” as far as being an artistically and historically important book that’s currently being published. Brandon Graham is a magnificent curator of artistic talent and doesn’t let the confines of conventional storytelling hold anyone back.

Rocket Girl #5 ($3.50) – Issue #5 marks the end of the first arc of another sneaky good Image Comics series. Amy Reeder’s art is so charming, and placing the book largely in a 1980’s setting shows a genuine affection, rather than a parodic look at the time period.

Saga #19 ($2.99) – One of the top 5 ongoings on the stands, and one of the best values in comics at $2.99.

Zero #8 ($2.99) – Ditto. “Zero” is my “Saga”, if you know what I mean.

Total: $19.96

Matt’s Picks:

Adventure Time #28 ($3.99) – What time is it? BUY THIS COMIC TIME!

American Vampire: Second Cycle #3 ($2.99) – Issue #2 ended on a rather tense cliffhanger. Of all the series to go away and come back in full force, “American Vampire: Second Cycle” is absolutely exemplary comics.

Ghosted #10 ($2.99) – The second arc turned me around quite a bit on this series. With a bit more room to stretch its legs, I think this series became what it really wanted to be in the first arc. Excited to see what others think.

Saga #19 ($2.99) – This issue opens in such a way that I’m pretty sure it is going to get banned by iTunes again. But “Saga’s” return is a definite return to form, that’s for sure.

Zero #8 ($2.99) – This. Fucking. Series. You guys.

Elektra #2 ($3.99) – I loved the first issue, particularly for the work of Mike Del Mundo. While I’m not fully sold on Blackmen’s involvement over Wells, I’d be excited what they have planned for what is sure to be a raucous follow-up.

Total: $19.94

Brian’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. #119 ($3.50) – The conclusion of James Harren’s most recent arc is as epic as you’d expect it to be. That means you need to buy it.

New 52: Futures End #3 ($2.99) – I will admit it – I am totally hooked on this series. There, I said it.

Flash Gordon #2 ($3.99) – One of the more promising debuts of the year, which featured an absolutely perfect pairing of Doc Shaner and Jeff Parker, was the first issue of “Flash Gordon.” It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for #2 – it has only been a little more than a month, but somehow feels much longer. Let’s hope that #2 is just as satisfying.

Batman Eternal #7 ($2.99) – The lesser of DC’s two weeklies is still pretty entertaining, and as we begin to expand the scope of the story, it gets more and more fun. Bring it on, DC!

Total: $13.47

Zach’s Picks:

Forever Evil #7 ($3.99) – The eternally late conclusion to DC’s first New 52 event finally hits the stands. While most of the story’s consequences have long since been spoiled, here’s hoping Johns and Finch can still send this book out as strongly as it began.

Justice League #30 ($3.99) – Following up on “Forever Evil,” this week also sees the debut of Lex Luthor as a full fledged Justice League member. I’ve been extremely excited for this status quo change since it was announced, and while it’s eerily reminiscent of “Dark Reign,” I’m eager to see what direction Johns takes it. Plus, the Doom Patrol returns! Reis and Mahnke art!

Wonder Woman #31 ($2.99) – (Can’t actually talk about this book without completely breaking down at the thought of Azzarello and company leaving. Just read it, ok?)

New 52 Futures End #3 ($2.99) – I can’t figure out exactly why, but I find myself moving this book to the top of my pile each week. Sure, the book suffers from a lot of the same problems the rest of the New 52 suffers from, but I can’t help but feel there’s something special about this book. I may be proven wrong later down the line, but so far this is more “52” than “Countdown,” and that’s something worth looking into.

MPH #1 ($2.99) – Mark Millar has been on an incredible streak of late with books like “Jupiter’s Legacy” and “Starlight.” Here’s hoping for the trifecta.

Saga #19 ($2.99) – “Saga” returns, with what is easily its most outrageous first page yet. Seriously, be careful who you open this book around.

Total Price: $19.94
