Comics Should Be Cheap (5/29/2013)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Walt’s Picks:

The Wake #1 ($2.99) – I won’t lie — I have been a bit down on Snyder lately. Not that his work has been bad, mind you, but it just hasn’t been as good as I would expect it to be. Now, though, he is re-entering the creator-owned sphere with a Vertigo miniseries, illustrated by the amazing Sean Murphy. The last time these two worked together, they made one of that year’s best miniseries — and it was a tie-in! I may not be the biggest “Batman” fan, but I have no doubt this will be worth checking out.

X-Men #1 ($3.99) – Brian Wood is amazing. Olivier Coipel is amazing. An all-female X-Men team, especially with this book’s cast, sounds amazing. Do yous see all of those amazings? Unfortunately, $3.99 isn’t amazing, but the book still has enough potential to be worth a curiosity buy.

Still, I don’t think public payphones have a redial button.

Morning Glories #27 ($3.99) – I think I am contractually obligated to say you should buy this. Hooray for Matt being a professional comic writer as of tomorrow!

Thief of Thieves #14 ($2.99) – James Asmus’s “Thief of Thieves” run was good, but not great, and as I prepare to move, I am also cutting my pull list significantly. Thankfully for Robert Kirkman, and unfortunately for my wallet, Andy Diggle should be enough of a shot in the arm for me to resist dropping this neat little book.

B.P.R.D. Vampire #3 ($3.50) – Ba and Moon. Done.

Total: $17.46

Vince’s Picks:

Amala’s Blade #2 ($3.50) – I was awfully surprised at how much I enjoyed the first issue of this 4 issue miniseries from Dark Horse. This is the type of fantasy fun that “Sword of Sorcery” should have been, but just wasn’t.

Earth 2 Annual #1 ($3.99) – I guess I’ll just enjoy this while it lasts, because the recent announcement of James Robinson’s leaving the title had me pretty bummed out when it happened. This week’s annual gives us an adventure with the new Batman of Earth 2, a concept that surely would have paid off in some way down the road, but I suppose we’ll never know until someone else picks up the ball and runs with it.

The Wake #1 ($2.99) – Sean Murphy interiors makes this an auto-buy for me, but Scott Snyder is a pretty darn good bet, as well.

Five Weapons #4 ($3.50) – This fun “young assassin school” concept hasn’t worn thin on me yet. I still can’t wait to see how Tyler is going to overcome his next seemingly impossible challenge.

New Avengers #6 ($3.99) – Jonathan Hickman is giving the Avengers corner of Marvel Comics everything he’s got. Once he’s done with his operatic double-shot of apocalyptic tales, I’m not sure what’s going to be left for him to do in work-for-hire comics!

Total: $17.97

Matt’s Picks:

X-Men #1 ($3.99) – After some delay, this book is finally coming out. And I, for one, can not wait to see what will happen with it. Wood is a good writer, and Coipiel is an amazing artist — but can the two combine to do anything particularly noteworthy in a time where X-Men comics are kind of awesome all around? I’ll put my money down on yes.

The Wake #1 ($2.99) – Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy? Uh, yeah, I’ll take one please.

Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles #22 ($3.99) – This is the start of the big Turtle “Event” thing, but the real reason to buy it is because Mateus Santolouco is on art. And holy shit, Mateus Santolouco is — pardon my language — fucking fantastic. His “Secret History” mini earlier this year was terrific and I expect him to do amazing things on this title, really put it on the map more so than a Turtles book already is.

Morning Glories #27 ($3.99) – This issue is bonus sized and I don’t know I hear some cool stuff is in it maybe show perhaps you should check it out and hey if you like it maybe tell the people who worked on it that you liked it or if you don’t like it don’t tell anyone. Some cool covers on this one, too.

Adventure Time Annual #1 ($4.99) Stories by Roger Langridge, Alex Cox, Bryce Carlson, Dustin Nguyen, Josh Williamson, Jason Ho, Derek Fridolfs, Kory Bing and Sfe Monster plus covers by Ale Garza, Natasha Allegri and Derek Fridolfs. All you need to know, really.

Total: $19.95 — Oh, and hey, if you happen to have $30 extra dollars, the new printing of “Lucifer” is out that collects the Prequel mini and the first thirteen issues is out. That oughta be nice.

Mystery David’s Picks:

Adventures Of Superman #1 ($3.99) – The big guy is finally back. And just in time for that little arthouse film you might have heard of, called Man Of Steel. Yeah, that one. Having already bought the digital copies of the stories printed here, I know it’s going to be worth my money, but I’m just always game for a new Superman comic.

X-Men #1 ($3.99) – It’s Brian Wood, Olivier Coipel and all of my favourite X-lady characters. I am so game for this.

The Wake #1 ($2.99) – It’s Scott Snyder, Sean Gordon Murphy and a horror comic. Again, I am so game for this.

Wolverine And The X-Men #30 ($3.99) – This book is finally getting back to the quality it was at way back during it’s opening issues after hit a bit of a rough patch. Bring on the Hellfire Saga.

Total: $14.96

Brian’s Picks:

Earth 2 Annual #1 ($4.99) – Now that the news has broke that James Robinson is leaving this book, it makes each issue’s arrival bittersweet. At least this annual will give an extra dose of Robinson goodness before the inevitable letdown.

B.P.R.D. Vampire #3 ($3.50) – If for nothing else than the incredible Ba/Moon art, this book is worth $3.50. Add to that a shifting tone that makes each issue unique, and some great deep Mignolaverse themes, and this is a solid, solid comic.

New Avengers #6 ($3.99) – With all due respect to a whole host of other great books, this is the Marvel title that gets me most excited to go to the store. Big concept is something Hickman does oh so well, and this is just about as large of a concept as a Big 2 book could possibly muster.

The Wake #1 ($2.99) – The no-brainer of the week. Duh.

X-Men #1 ($3.99) – I’ve always thought that the women of the X-books were the most interesting – Brian Wood puts that idea to the test and, I must admit, I’m pretty excited for it.

Total: 19.46
