Comics Should Be Cheap! (5/6/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

We Can Never Go Home #2 ($3.99) – I will be very surprised if Black Mask isn’t on basically every list for “publisher of the year” when we start doing year end lists, and I’ll boldly say that “We Can Never Go Home” is possibly the best book from Black Mask. Hood, Kindlon, and Rosenberg are creating something that’s both simple and dramatic, mixing a teenage “coming of age” road trip story with a dash of superpowers and just a bit of a crime story. If you were late to the party, issue 1 is getting a reprint and should be out this week as well.

Arcadia #1 ($3.99) – Boom! has a great tradition of publishing quality books by essentially unknown creators, and it looks like “Arcadia” is going to continue that trend. The idea of a small portion of the population living in the real world and supporting the vast majority in a digital world is something that sounds just perfect and should make a really fun comic.

Feathers #5 ($3.99) – Jorge Corona has been making something special with “Feathers”, crafting an all-ages story that truly has something to offer to readers young and old. As we near the end, I’m sad to see it going already.

Roche Limit: Clandestiny #1 ($3.50) – “Roche Limit” was one of my favorites of 2014. Seeing Moreci return with artist Kyle Charles to the setting and play with new characters and new time periods is exciting. More “Roche Limit” is definitely a good thing.

Total: $15.47

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Wonder Woman 77 Special #1 ($7.99) – Although the current “Wonder Woman” series continues to be one of the worst things DC has ever published, they have been at least trying to give Diana some alternatives. “Sensation” has had its hits and misses, but overall has been solid, and, following their success with “Batman ’66”, I think this is well worth a look. Plus Lynda Carter.

Rocket Girl #6 ($3.99) – I hope this latest long delay has been so Amy Reeder can get ahead on her workload. “Rocket Girl” is charming, exciting, and energetic, and this new arc hopefully will maintain all that.

The Wicked + the Divine #10 ($3.50) – Dunno about you, but I’m ready to ragnorock’n’roll.

Feathers #5 ($3.99) – Last time, we finally met the Red Scarf dude and Poe figured out he could fly. I think this series is fantastic and definitely makes it to the top of my pull whichever week it comes out.

Total: $19.47

Brian’s Picks:

Afterlife with Archie #8 ($3.99) – This book is so much better than it should be, and it keeps getting better.

Wolf Moon #6 ($3.99) – This great werewolf mini wraps up – Bunn and Haun have given us a totally unique, scary take on a classic concept.

A “Convergence” Tie-In Of Your Choosing ($3.99) – Look, we all love DC pre-Flashpoint, right? So, pick your favorite book of that era, and get the “Convergence” tie-in. It might be goofy, it might be weird, but it is a little slice of the past, and that’s certainly worth $3.99, isn’t it?

God Hates Astronauts #8 ($3.50) – The funniest book on the stands, hands down.

Total: $15.47

Keith’s Picks:

Batman Earth One Volume Two ($24.99) – The first volume of “Batman Earth One” by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank was a fun book with gorgeous artwork. When these two work together (“Shazam!”, “Superman and the Legion of Superheroes”), they conjure magic. Let’s hope, with the addition of the Riddler and Killer Croc, that this second volume will continue their effort to build an alternate Bat-world that has so far been intriguing and very promising.

Total: $24.99
