Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Matt Lune’s Picks:
By Night #1 ($3.99) – I love John Allison’s work, from “Bad Machinery” to “Giant Days,” so to see a new series coming out from him – with art by the awesome Christine Larsen, whose work on “Valentine” with Alex De Campi is so, so good – this is very good news.
Nancy Drew #1 ($3.99) – I loved the “Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys” series last year, and seriously, what’s not to love about this creative team? Kelly Thompson, Jenn St. Onge and Tula Lotay doing the cover? It’s a buy on sight for me.
Bloodstrike #0 ($3.99) – If you’re not reading “Copra,” I can’t even describe what you’re missing out on, but let’s just say that seeing Michel Fiffe working on Rob Liefeld’s old property “Bloodstrike” makes a lot of sense.
Marvel Two-in-One Annual #1 ($4.99) – “Marvel Two-in-One” has been the “Fantastic Four” book that I’ve been missing, and, aside from being the spiritual continuation of not only that series but of it’s titular namesake from days gone by (another favorite of mine), it’s some of Chip Zdarsky’s best superhero work to date.
Thor #1 ($5.99) – Jason Aaron’s epic saga on “Thor” takes another interesting turn, and takes in another issue #1. Seeing how Odinson has adapting to being unworthy has been fascinating to see, and this – giving him countless hammers to replace his long-lost Mjolnir – sounds like a fun new take.
Total: $22.95 – A little over but I can’t narrow it down!

Mark’s Picks:
“By Night” #1 ($3.99)— The first part of a limited series by John Allison and Christine Larsen. I believe (but I’m really not sure) this is set in the Bobbins Universe. Not that that should matter—Allison is always great at making each series stand alone. I’ve not read this one yet, but considering the calibre of the creators, this is a must-get.
“B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know” #7 ($3.99)— I had a blast with this issue. “The Devil You Know” is building momentum magnificently. I’m pretty much enjoying each new issue more than the last.
“Monstress” #17 ($3.99)— I’m sitting on this one until the whole third arc is out (concludes next month), so I can’t really comment on this arc specifically, but there’s a reason it’s nominated for five Eisners this year. I cannot recommend this series enough.
“The Damned” #10 ($3.99)— Yes! The ‘Daughter’s Danse’ arc is finally here. This picks up where “The Damned” #8 left off, and I think this issue shows the series branching out a bit, exploring some new corners of “The Damned’s” universe.
Total: $15.96.

Kate’s Picks:
Nancy Drew #1 ($3.99) – I loved Nancy Drew as a child, and with two of my favorite creatives on this book (Kelly Thompson on script, Jenn St-Onge on art), I know it’s going to be a good – – a refreshed, modern Nancy Drew that also pays respect to what has made her so timeless.
The Weatherman #1 ($3.99) – Another book that is on my pull list thanks to the creative team – – in this case, “Shirtless Bear-Fighter’s” Jody LeHeup. He’ll make this mystery of a weatherman accused of an interstellar terrorist attack thrilling and fun. And the neon colors on the cover speak to my inner 80s child.
Thor #1 ($3.99) – I know for many fans, this latest round of re-numbering is frustrating (and personally, I’m glad the Marvel series I read regularly didn’t fall into this bucket). The re-numbering is also my opportunity to jump into ongoing series that I haven’t had the chance to do before, this week’s being the newly relaunched “Thor.”
Continued belowLady Mechanika Clockwork Assassin TP ($9.99) – The most fun of any of the Lady Mechanika books I have read thus far.
Total: $21.96. Just a little over, but I didn’t need that second latte anyway.

Kevin’s Picks:
“Marvel Two-In-One Annual” #1 ($4.99) – This book was the best thing to come out of Legacy and I am so glad it is continuing into the Fresh Start era. With this annual we get some sick Declan Shalvey art which is sure to be a stunner. Plus Zdarsky’s ‘ite.
“Titans Special” #1 ($4.99) – Good ‘ol “Various” on art on this one. They’ve been replaced by “Sergio Davila, Brent Peeples, Brian Ching, Nicola Scott, and Ben Oliver.” That is a murderer’s row of DC art talent though that makes this book well worth the cover price as we get a “New Justice” Titans team.
“Hawkman” #1 ($3.99) – I’m not a huge “Hawkman” fan, you know, cause his history is utterly indecipherable, but considering how central Carter Hall was to “Metal” this seems to be a must going into the “New Justice” age at DC. And you know, Hawkman is like the X-O Manowar of DC, and Robert Venditti had a great 50+ issue run on that. Plus those preview pages have some of the most beautiful Bryan Hitch art of the last few years. This is going to be a fun ride.
“Stellar” #1 ($3.99) – Sometimes a solicit just grabs you, and I’m really a sucker for space political drama.
Total: $17.96

Nick’s Picks:
City Vol 2 ($12.95) – With its interconnected stories, Keiichi Arawi’s absurdist comedy vignettes had a sense of cohesion in volume 1 that wasn’t there in his previous series, Nichijou. In all honesty, I think I like this series even better. Excited for the new volume.
New Super-Man and the Justice League of China #24 ($3.99) – One of the best books of Rebirth concludes. Gene Luen Yang has been doing the Lord’s work with this book, looking at Western symbols from an Eastern point of view and vice-versa, uncovering new truths along the way. The book just got better and better as it went along, so I’m sure we’re going to end on a high note.
Nancy Drew #1 ($3.99) – Kelly Thompson seems to be taking what she did on Hawkeye and applying it to Nancy Drew. I’ve never had much of an interest in the character, but I’m sure she and Jenn St-Onge can turn me around!
Total: $20.93.
