Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/27/2018)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

“Spill Zone: The Broken Vow” ($22.99)— The second half of Scott Westerfeld and Alex Puvilland’s “Spill Zone.” The first was a highlight from 2017, so I’m eager dive back into this world.

“Harrow County” #32 ($4.99)— This one’s unmissable. Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook bring three years of “Harrow County” to a close in spectacular fashion.

“Blackwood” #2 ($3.99)— I’m on a bit of a “Beast of Burden” kick at the moment, especially knowing that there’s a new four-issue miniseries on the way later this year (and another two-issue story with Jill Thompson after that). And knowing that “Blackwood” is unofficially set in the same universe (or at the very least playing by the same rules), it’s a great way to expend some of that anticipation energy. But even if “Blackwood” weren’t connected to “Beasts of Burden,” this’d be on my list.

“Shadow Roads” #1 ($3.99)— A spin-off set in the world of “The Sixth Gun.” It’s strange, I actually like this one because of how it isn’t like “The Sixth Gun.” This story feels like it could go in a very different direction, and the characters, especially Henry Grey, got their hooks into me fast.

Total: $35.96. I had a list of ten comics I simply had to pick up this week and I whittled it down to four, but I couldn’t get it down to any less. Sorry, but I just couldn’t play by the rules this time.

Kevin’s Picks:

Ms. Marvel #31 ($4.99) – Month after month this book continues to deliver the kind of fun and authentic superhero romp that we should all want and that I will continue to cry over. I love that this comic has made it to 50 issues and that they are celebrating in a big way. I want 50 more issues of “Ms. Marvel” and if G. Willow Wilson never leaves…well that’s fine with me.

Detective Comics #983 ($2.99) – James Tynion IV’s run on “Detective” since Rebirth started was a highlight. I am absolutely looking forward to Bryan Hill’s short run focusing on Duke, Cass, and Black Lightning. Bring back the Outsiders!

The Flash #49 ($2.99) – Speaking of books that make people cry, Wally and the possibility of his family coming back is pretty damn tearjerking and emotional. This is the culmination of Wally’s Rebirth storyline, and Williamson and Porter are going big and going home building a bog story with huge DCU ramifications.

Harbinger Wars 2 #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of this event was alright, but definitely saved by Tomas Giorello’s art. I love Valiant and I will continue to follow and want this to be good and for the landing to stick.

Batman: Prelude to the Wedding: Harley Quinn vs Joker ($3.99) – Surprisingly…the wedding tie-ins are actually really great. The art on all of them has been gorgeous and Seeley seems to have a full grasp on the adjacent Bat-family and what makes them tick. These are some of the best tie-ins I’ve ever read to an event story. It is very, very possible these will be better than whatever the actual wedding will be.

Total: $18.95. Next week is gonna be huge.

Nick’s Picks:

Astro City #52 ($3.99) – Goodbye, Astro City. I first discovered the series last year when reviewing for this site, and I’ve diligently followed it since. You bet I’ll be following it into the OGN world, and until then, this issue should be a great send-off to its current format.

Flash #49 ($2.99) – I’m always down for some pre-Flashpoint Wally Flash. Please continue pandering to me, DC.

Continued below

Sex Criminals #25 ($4.99) – The hype around this book has completely died down since its early days, and that’s a shame. The book continues to be as funny, heartwarming, and eye-opening as ever. This is a huge milestone – and if my hunch is right, the end of the penultimate arc.

Ms. Marvel #31 ($4.99) – Speaking of milestone issues, how often is it that we get 50 issues of a title with one definitive writer (and colorist!) at ANY publisher? G. Willow Wilson continues to make this book the quirky teen drama that asks the hard questions that we need in 2018. Here’s to another however-many-issues-she-wants-to-write.

Detective Comics #983 ($2.99) – The primer for what we assume is a new Outsiders book partially starring Cassandra Cain? Yes please.

Total: $19.95.
