Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/1/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Goddamned #4 ($3.99) – While I do get a bit annoyed with the overall lateness of Jason Aaron’s creator-owned comics, they’re generally good enough that the weight is worth it. So far “Goddamned” has been worth it as Aaron and Guera tell the grittiest Bible story. Now if only they could get it monthly then I’d really be happy.

Revisionist #1 ($3.99) –  I haven’t read much from Aftershock Comics, but a Frank Barbiere/Garry Brown book is enough to get me to bite. That it’s a time travel story is just icing on the cake. Really hoping this book is as good as the art leads me to believe and there’s a real winner here.

Strange Attractors #1 ($3.99) – This is something that many probably have in OGN form already, but it’s well worth checking out for those that don’t already own it. While there’s some new backups in these issues, I don’t know that it’s worth buying again if you already own it. Still, this book is one that has an incredibly interesting concept and great execution, making it a must read.

Total: $11.97

Mark’s Picks:

Hellboy in Hell #10: For Whom the Bell Tolls ($2.99) — Obviously I’m picking this up. How could I not? This is the end of “Hellboy in Hell”, and the last “Hellboy” story drawn by Mike Mignola for at least a year, and possibly even the last in the ongoing storyline. I really, really want to read this book… and yet I don’t. I’m not ready to face the finality of it. I get the feeling I’ll finish this and then need to be alone for… days, I guess.

There’re a lot of complicated emotions tangled up in this issue.

Paper Girls #6 ($2.99) — This is a series that makes me eager for the monthly solicitations specifically to see the next cover. I can’t entirely explain why, but I love the crap out of them. I also like the story behind the cover, so that’s good. Plus, you know, there’s time travel, which I love (when it’s done properly).

Baltimore: Empty Graves #3 ($3.99) — I’m really digging Peter Bergting’s artwork in this issue. He’s got excellent instincts for monster design.

Dark Horse Day 2016 30th Anniversary Sampler Bundle ($0.00) — There’re extracts from three stories in this: “Aliens vs. Predator: Blood Time”, “Sin City: Daddy’s Little Girl”, and “The Umbrella Academy: Anywhere But Here”, plus a new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” story. It’s Dark Horse Month on the site and I’d be remiss if I didn’t pick this up. This one’ll be out on Saturday, June 4.

Total: $9.97. Hmm, this was a light week.

Vince’s Picks:

Paper Girls #6 ($2.99) A “bold-new direction”?! Well, I don’t know about that. Every new issue of “Paper Girl” seems bold and new to me.

Batman: Rebirth #1 ($2.99) The first slate of Rebirth books come out today (Batman, Superman, Green Lanterns, and Green Arrow), but if I had to pick one, this is the one I’d recommend. Tom King is a treasure, and quite a “get” for DC, as far as exclusive talents go. Have you read the last issue of “Omega Men”? Mein gott.

Doctor Fate #13 ($2.99) I really enjoyed the adventures of Khalid Nassour. I’m bummed, because I fear he’s getting sent to the bench for Rebirth. Hopefully I’m wrong. This was a neat little book and it looked beautiful.

Strange Attractors #1 ($3.99) I never caught this the first time around. Now it’s being released in individual issues and I’m looking forward to checking it out. Charles Soule. Math Weirdness. New York City. Sign me up.

Power Rangers: Pink Ranger #1 ($3.99) The new “Power Rangers” comic has been….good?!?! I have no reason to believe this will be any different.

Total: $16.95

Keith’s Picks:

Batman Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – If anyone deserves to take over the “Batman” title from Scott Snyder, it’s definitely Tom King. After writing impressive runs on “Grayson” and “Omega Men”, he’s more than proved that he’s a gifted storyteller. With co-writer Snyder on board for this one-shot and Calendar Man making an appearance, this “Batman” run sounds like it’s ready to surprise us right off the bat.

Superman Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – The past month has been a wild ride in the Super books and this one-shot catches everyone up on Clark, Lois, and their son Jon. Peter Tomasi has written family dynamics before in “Batman and Robin”, but it will be interesting to see how he handles a much different family in “Superman”.

Green Lanterns Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – I’ve never read a book by Sam Humphries, so I’m going into this one-shot before “Green Lanterns” begins with no expectations. I do know that Simon Baz was an interesting Lantern created by Geoff Johns and Jessica Cruz had a highly emotional character arc during “Darkseid War”. I look forward to seeing what these two Earth-bound heroes will be up to going forward.

Green Arrow Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – Benjamin Percy didn’t impress me much with his previous “Green Arrow” run, but I’m willing to give this issue a chance solely for the addition of Black Canary. Maybe Percy will impress me this time.

Total: $11.96 – It’s a small week, yet multiple rereads of that impeccable “DC Universe Rebirth” #1 still has me pumped for the future of the DCU.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Paper Girls #6 ($2.99) – Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s wild series returns for more time jumping, more friendship, and more intrigue. Vaughan is a master at making a satisfying single issue while keeping the larger picture in mind, while Chiang is a master at…pretty much everything.

Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven ($12.99) – We already saw an exceptional “Andre the Giant” biography from Box Brown a couple years ago, but this one is officially licensed by the Andre the Giant Estate, so make of that what you will. Denis Medri’s art looks cool, though. And it’ll be interesting to see how this book approaches some of the same material.

Total: $15.98
