Comics Should Be Cheap! (6/15/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Manifest Destiny #20 ($2.99) – This whole arc of “Manifest Destiny” is apparently supposed to involve Sasquatch, which is awesome. Judging from the solicit text, this issue actually sees some of the explorers make contact with Sasquatch, so that’s even better. Pretty much, if you put a Sasquatch in a book, I’m down with checking it out.

Invincible #129 ($2.99) – Seeing Cory Walker back as artist on “Invincible” has been fun so far. As always, “Invincible” is full of soap opera level plot twists, but it does it in a way that doesn’t feel melodramatic. While I’ll be glad to see Ottley come back, having Walker around for an arc is pretty great.

Tales from the Darkside #1 ($3.99) – I honestly don’t know much about this book, but the fact that it’s another Joe Hill/Gabriel Rodriguez collaboration is enough to make me give it a look. Those two are a winning combination, in my book.

Total: $9.97

Vince’s Picks:

The Sixth Gun #50 ($3.99) – “The Sixth Gun” comes to an end and remains the best thing Cullen Bunn has ever done. It’s quite an accomplishment to get a series to 50 issues these days, creator-owned or not.

Superman #1 ($2.99) – Out of all the DC #1’s this week, that had ‘Rebirth’ issues 2 weeks ago, I think that folks should give “Superman” a second chance if they didn’t really dig the first one. That ‘Rebirth’ issue really was a bridge and trust me, the ongoing series immediately feels a lot different. The focus is on Superman & Family in this one – and there’s a lot to like while focusing on that.

Star Wars: Han Solo #1 ($3.99) – Marjorie Liu writing Han Solo within a line of ‘Star Wars’ books that haven’t really let us down, so far.

Total: $10.97

Ken’s Picks:

Descender #12 ($2.99): After the harrowing events of “Machine Moon”, “Descender” finally makes its return. The tale of TIM-21 and his comrades seems to be taking an approach similar to “Wicked & the Divine”‘s third arc, using the arc to tell character-focused single-issue stories, starting with 21’s menacing doppelganger, TIM-22.

Lazarus #22 ($3.99): Speaking of returns, everyone’s favorite all-too-realistic dystopia from Greg Rucka and Michael Lark makes its return. And the next arc is called “Cull”, so you know it’s going to be sunshine and rainbows.

Total: $5.98

Mark’s Picks:

The Sixth Gun #50 ($9.99) — In a move that shocks no one, I picked the “Sixth Gun” finale. I’m doing a huge six-part retrospective interview on the series so obviously I think it’s worth buying. Oh man, this comic goes out in style—60 pages! I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll simply say that I loved it. So much. Cullen, Brian, thank you for this comic.

Fight Club 2 ($29.99) — Collecting all ten issues in a nice hardcover, how could I say no to this? (There’s a big library edition coming later in the year, so if you want larger art and extra special features, maybe wait for that.) Honestly, I think this will read much better collected. The episodic nature of a monthly release doesn’t work for all stories, and for me this is one of those cases.

Total: $39.98. I am aware I’m not very good at this “under $20” game.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties ($17.99) – Okay, so not only is “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” one of Neil Gaiman’s most accomplished short stories, but the comic adaptation is from the fabulous sibling team of Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon. Literally, all the elements are here and it’s almost like all the talent involved would have to go out of their way not to land the execution.

Total: $17.99 – For those wanting to break the budget, don’t forget about “Sun Bakery” #2, “Han Solo” #1, and “The Spire” #8.
