Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Conan the Barbarian #17 ($3.50) – As much as I’ve been enjoying it, I was going to drop Brian Wood’s Conan solely because I need to shed some pull list weight. But then he had do go and have an excellent beginning to his next arc with the stellar Davide Gianfelice. God, what jerks.
Mara #5 ($2.99) – Speaking of Brian Wood, we are on the penultimate issue of his new super-volleyball miniseries with Ming Doyle. I wasn’t crazy about the first issue, but by now, I’m a Mara fanatic. Wood, Doyle, and Bellaire have made me of all people read a comic loosely related to sports. That’s a feat in and of itself.
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #108 ($3.50) – Okay, so I’m actually a couple of issues behind. So what? It’s still B.P.R.D.
– I missed the first issue of this very mini miniseries, but seeing as it’s a light week, I’ll bend the rules a tiny bit and pick up both. Edgar Allan Poe is the master of short horror stories (sorry Lovecraft), and Richard Corben is the master of horror comics. How did I miss this one, again?
Total: $17.97

Dream Thief #2 ($3.99) – Jai Nitz and Greg Smallwood put together a nifty, entirely unlikely little book over here at Dark Horse Comics. There are plenty of laughs, thrills, and mysteries to uncover, but the gorgeous and carefully planned artwork brings home the bacon.
Wonder Woman #21 ($2.99) – Every month. Slam dunk.
Revival #11 ($2.99) – Another slam dunk. It’s always on my list, because it’s always so good.
New Avengers #7 ($3.99) – For my money, this title rounds out the top 5 books being published by Marvel right now, alongside Hawkeye, FF, Daredevil, and Thor: God of Thunder. Hickman is imbuing the Illuminati Avengers with the stuff of the all-time great stories of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Total: $13.96

Captain Marvel #13 ($2.99) – There will never be a time where I don’t recommend this comic. All of you should be buying it.
Mara #5 ($2.99) – Brian Wood and Ming Doyle have been retelling the Superman story featuring a woman of colour and volleyball. This is like the greatest thing to ever happen to me.
Age Of Ultron #10 ($3.99) – I guess I’m seeing this through to the end. Part of me is telling myself not to buy two copies just to keep one sealed, but I know I’m going to anyway. Curse that collector mentality.
Fantastic Four #9 ($2.99) – It might not get the love like “FF” does, but I am loving what Fraction has been doing on this title.
Captain Midnight #0 ($2.99) – This is a purely speculative buy based on how much I enjoyed Dark Horse’s “Ghost” revival. I hope this is just as good.
Total: $15.95

New Avengers #7 ($3.99) – I’m a believer in what Hickman is doing here –
B.P.R.D. #108 ($3.50) – Month in and month out, the best buy in comics. C’mon people!
Green Lanterns New Guardains #21 ($2.99) – Justin Jordan is a writer whose potential I love, but has come up a little short in his DC work. However, this is far enough outside of what he’s known for that it could be a super pleasant surprise. Surprise me!
Batwoman #21 ($2.99) – Francavilla! Francavilla! Francavilla!
Wonder Woman #21 ($2.99) – Is there anyone out there who doesn’t think this is pretty great?
Animal Man #21 ($2.99) – A consistently forgettable book that is actually quite good. Sorry, Animal bro!

Uncanny Avengers #9 ($3.99) – The first arc of “Uncanny Avengers” was take it or leave it, but the combination of Daniel Acuña’s art and the return to “Uncanny X-Force” story threads makes this a must have. Hickman may have the market cornered on bombastic Avengers stories, but Remender’s stock is rising.
Batwoman #21 ($2.99) – Francesco Francavilla. ‘Nuff said.
Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates #26 ($3.99) – Joshua Hale Fialkov and Carmine Di Giandomenico’s debut just two short weeks ago was a balls to the wall shake up the series needed. I for one can’t wait to see wha the duo has in store next.
Sixth Gun/Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun ($7.98) – I’m a fair bit behind on both of these books, but I can’t recommend them enough. There aren’t nearly enough good Western comics out there, and this one’s supernatural tinge makes it all the better.
Total: $18.95

Age of Ultron #10 ($3.99) – Oh, why the heck not.
