Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Ghost Fleet #8 ($1.99) – “Ghost Fleet” has been one of the most insane and fun rides in recent comics. In my opinion, both Donny Cates and Daniel Warren Johnson leveled up with this book and it’s a shame that it didn’t get to go for the planned 12 issues. While it’s currently a digital only book, there’s going to be some sweet, sweet trades coming out in the near future. If you need real convincing, just look at that cover. It’s a dude fighting a demon and ripping off the demon’s jaw. Badass.
Covenant #1 ($3.99) – This is, admittedly, a seemingly odd pick for me given the subject matter and me being an atheist, but I’m completely down with Rob Liefeld writing Bible fanfic. Everything about that sounds awesome and I can’t wait to read it.
Broken World #1 ($3.99) – Frank Barbiere and Chris Peterson are two creators quickly on the rise and it’s great to see them teaming up on a book. I’ve already read this issue and I think it’s worth buying just for the ending twist alone.
Midnighter #1 ($2.99) – I’ve never read most of the books that Midnighter was in and I’m not really current on a lot of DC books, but I do know that I like Steve Orlando’s writing and that Aco is a great artist. After reading that free 8 page short last month, I’m up for whatever the team does with Midnighter as it’s bound to be a hell of a read.
Total: $12.96. Use the rest, and a few extra bucks, to get caught up on “Ghost Fleet”.

Keith’s Picks:
Midnighter #1 ($2.99) – This is my most anticipated new title of the month. The enthusiasm of writer Steve Orlando and artist Aco on social media about their book has been infectious and last month’s free eight page story was more than promising.
Omega Men #1 ($2.99) – Tom King has been doing a stunning job co-writing “Grayson”. Even though I know nothing about the Omega Men, I am more than willing to give this title a chance because of King’s involvement.
Justice League #41 ($4.99) – The preludes to “The Darkseid War” in “Justice League” #41 and the FCBD DC story whetted my appetite for what looks to be an epically fun ride. Not only am I excited for Geoff Johns’ story, but I’m glad to see artist Jason Fabok getting so much attention. He deserves to be a superstar.
Action Comics #41 ($3.99) – Speaking of artists deserving to be superstars… Aaron Kuder creates gorgeous art on every page he puts his pen to and I’m glad he and Greg Pak are sticking to this book post-“Convergence”. It’s the beginning of the “Truth” storyline that is going to be running through all the Supes-related books and, if the sneak peek stories are any indication, it’s going to be a very compelling and wild ride.
Green Arrow #41 ($2.99) – Post-Jeff Lemire “Green Arrow” was fun but never reached the heights of the Lemire/Andrea Sorrentino breathtaking goodness. I’m intrigued to see what writer Ben Percy is going to do with the Emerald Archer. He’s said he’s going to use elements of Lemire’s run, which is smart thinking. We already know the book is going to look gorgeous because Patrick Zircher is onboard as the new artist.
Green Lantern #41 ($3.99) – Hal Jordan without a ring is just one of the huge status quo changes that DC has for its big guns. “Godhead” and the issues after that storyline were exciting and I hope that Robert Venditti and Billy Tan can inject something else exciting and new into one of the greatest superhero’s tumultuous life.

Brian’s Picks:
Airboy #1 ($2.99) – An amazing, weird, hilarious, cock-filled issue. More fun than you’ll know what to do with.
Archie #666 ($3.99) – “Archie” is dead. Long live “Archie.”
The Omega Men #1/Midnighter #1 ($2.99 each) – Two of DC’s more intriguing offerings in their 8-page previews were these two books from interesting and unusual creative teams. I won’t judge you for picking two different DC books this week, but know that I’m secretly judging you, and just lied a few words ago.
Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe #7 ($3.99) – The best. This book is simply the best.
Total: $16.95

Matt Garcia’s Picks:
Feathers #6 ($3.99) – The epic conclusion of Jorge Corona’s adventure story. I will be sad to see this book go, but here’s hoping Corona gives us an epic conclusion.
The Wicked + The Divine #11 ($3.50) – The murderer has been revealed and the world is about to go up in flames, yet still it all seems like the most kicking party this side of the Atlantic.
Star Wars #6 ($3.99) – John Cassaday’s last issue (for a while, maybe?) finds Luke Skywalker squaring off with Boba Fett. Jason Aaron and Cassaday have done a great job of making well-tread territory exciting and interesting. We know where this story’s going to end up, but we’re having a blast getting there.
Midnighter #1 ($2.99) – Both Steve Orlando and Aco have done some work I’ve enjoyed in the past, and it looks like DC is at least willing to have some fun with Midnighter. If this has any of the vibe of “Grayson,” then I’m definitely on board till it’s inevitable cancellation.

Jess’s Picks:
The Ghost Fleet #8 ($1.99) – This is the last issue so it’s not the best place to jump in but seriously, “The Ghost Fleet” is a perfect action comic. It’s got big rigs, demons, Mickey Reno and non-stop action. You can get the whole series on Dark Horse’s digital store so there’s no excuse to ignore this awesome series.
Death Vigil #7 ($3.99) – “Death Vigil” #1-6 is available for free. This was done to get people motivated to try out the series and then buy the remaining issue. Stjepan Sejic (“Rat Queens” & “Sunstone”) is telling the best fantasy story in comics. It has magic, giant demons, characters you’ll fall in love with and lots of humor. Sejic’s art is of course stunning in every way. Sejic has a lot of plans for this series but sales aren’t strong. Get on board with “Death Vigil”. You won’t regret it.
The Wicked + The Divine #11 ($3.50) – Wic +Div. Nuff said.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #6 ($3.99) – I have not had this much fun with a comic book ever. “Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” is beyond funny and thanks to the very standalone-ish way of each issue, you can jump right into the series here.
Midnighter #1 ($2.99) – I am psyched for this series. I don’t have a ton of experience with this character but I really enjoyed “Undertow” so Steve Orlando has my faith. The sneak peek for this had sex, violence and attitude which are all things I like in a comic book. I’m ready for “Midnighter”.
