Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles. That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week.
Captain America #1 ($3.99) – America! Fu- well, you know the rest. Now, before you say anything, I hate renumbering probably just as much as you do. That being said, the number on the cover has nothing to do with the quality of the comic, for better or worse. With Ed Brubaker being a man whom I have had nothing but praise for since he started on the previous volume, I have no doubt that this will be anything but solid all around. Plus, Steve McNiven? Yeah, he’s been a bit sloppier lately than he usually is (see Nemesis), but McNiven at his worst is better than many artists at their best. Of course, I’m counting editor-in-chief Matthew Meylikhov on that list of artists.
The Unwritten #27 ($2.99) – Three issue streak! By now, you know how much I love this series. Add some pulpy goodness to this already excellent book, and you have an insta-buy. Granted, it was already an insta-buy, so it’s more like a travel-to-the-future-and-buy-it sort of thing.
FF #6 ($2.99) – Six issue streak! It looks like this is where we’ll be finding out how Black Bolt escaped his fate in War of Kings, but that’s not why I’m reading this. No, I pick this book up because Jonathan Hickman doing high-level sci-fi is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. You probably already knew that, though, and have this series on your pull list…
…right?
Detective Comics #879 ($2.99) – Six issue streak! Every comic on this list is by a creator I greatly enjoy. This issue, though, takes the prize for the one I’m most excited for. If you read last issue, you know why. My biggest concern with the relaunch is that a lot of titles are just going to end with a whimper, but that isn’t going to be the case with Detective. Buy it. Buy it.
American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #2 ($2.99) – Two issue streak! I enjoyed the first issue of this miniseries quite a bit. As I’ve said before, though, a good series is usually determined by whether the second issue is better than the first or not. Scott Snyder writing and Sean Murphy illustrating? Yeah, I think this series is safe.
Red Wing #1 ($3.50) – More praise for Hickman? You bet. Hickman finally returns to creator-owned comics, and what a return it is. For this crazy ride through a future where wars are fought with time-traveling aircraft, Hickman is joined by artist Nick Pitarra, who matches his beautifully insane ideas as well as anybody else could. I’ve read this already, so I’ll spare you the trouble of guessing: you want this comic.
Total: $19.45
Gladstones School For World Conquerors #3 ($2.99) – In my initial review of this series, I was fairly lukewarm on it, but leaning towards “enjoy.” With the third issue (which I have conveniently already read), I am fully in. It’s absolutely wonderful. Sign me up for the full series, boys!
Iron Age #2/X-Men: Schism #1 ($4.99) – Two events from Marvel for $4.99 each?! Yeesh! Take all my money, guys! Seriously though: my excitement is pretty much through the roof for Schism, and Iron Age #2 is basically two comics, with Rob Williams at the helm (who, as I’ve noted before, is my current up-and-comer at Marvel). Can’t go wrong with any of this, I don’t think!
Continued belowUltimate Comics Fallout ($3.99) – Continuing this weeks trend for pricy comics from yours truly, here is the beginning of the New Ultimate U (NuUU?). I’ve never missed a single issue of the Ultimate U since I hopped in (yes, I have Ultimatum and every tie-in), so Bendis + Hickman + Spencer = fingers crossed.
Hellboy: The Fury #2 ($2.99) – This was a hard last pick, but you know what? Hellboy is excellent, and I am clearly in some kind of Event-streak this week (minus Gladstones). So Hellboy wins! Buy Hellboy! BUY!
Total: $19.95
