Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Invincible #138 ($2.99) – “Invincible” draws ever closer to its conclusion and that’s going to be a sad day. Still, Kirkman and Ottley are giving us some of the most insane issues of this long running series, which is really saying something.

Curse Words #6 ($3.99) – This weird, ridiculous book is back and comics is all the better for it. It’ll be interesting to see what Wizord and Ruby do now that Ruby is de-powered and, presumably, stuck on Earth.

Royal City #5 ($3.99) – “Royal City” has been checking all the boxes for a good Jeff Lemire book. As a big fan of his work, I’m all here for it and am loving seeing him write and draw a book of his own again.

Heartthrob Season 2 #2 ($3.99)– Callie has to break her friends out of a Canadian jail and things are certainly only going to get more complicated from there. I missed this book while it was on hiatus between seasons, so it’s great to have Sebela and Wilson back making this fantastic comic.

Total: $14.96

Kent’s Picks

Aliens: Dead Orbit #3 ($3.99) – James Stokoe is the ultimate badass. Maybe you haven’t been keeping up on current events but we’ve just got our collective ass kicked by his xenomorph virtuosity. Wascylewski’s in some pretty real shit now. Game’s over, man. Game over!

Spencer & Locke #4 ($3.99) – David Pepose finishes up his fantastic mini this week. Jorge Santiago Jr.’s art is a little rougher around the edges than something like Oeming’s work on “Powers”. But the book is all the better for it. To call this “Last of the Innocent” with “Calvin and Hobbes” seems reductive, but there’s really no better way to put it.

Aquaman #26 ($3.99) – Consensus was that #25 was a perfect jumping on point for new readers. And I’m proof of that. I’m stoked for Aquaman for the first time, ever. Stjepan Sejic’s art made me a True Believer… wait, that doesn’t sound right.

The Wild Storm #6 ($3.99) – In the spirit of making of old things new again, I have no qualms saying this: The POV sequence from last issue – that shit Cray. By this point I don’t expect anything less from the hearts and minds of Warren Ellis and Jon Davis-Hunt.

Generation Gone #1 ($4.99) – Seems like Ales Kot hasn’t been seen around these parts for some time, but his work on “Changes,” “Secret Avengers,” and “Zero” will get me breathing heavy any time I see his name on a book. Now, they might not all be zingers, but they’ll take you on a trip regardless.

Total: $20.95 – Over again. But it could have been worse. “Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer”#3 ($3.99) comes out as well. I’d add that to the list to, but who am I kidding, I’ll double-dip for sure once it comes out collected in a slick hardcover.

Matt Lune’s Picks:

Generation Gone #1 ($4.99) – The solicit lists this as “Skins meets Unbreakable, so instantly I’m intrigued. The rest of the solicit sounds like a Warren Ellis fever dream, and if you know anything about me know that I mean that in a great way. Ales Kot has always produced smart, compelling and important work, so I’m excited for this.

Aliens Dead Orbit #3 ($3.99) – This book has been amazing, one of the best of the year so far for me. This, the final issues, sees Wascylewski make one last ditch attempt to survive the deadly xenomorphs. It goes without saying that James Stokoe’s art has been stunning, but I’m going to say it anyway: his art has been STUNNING.

Continued below

Moonstruck #1 ($3.99) – When one of the creators of “Lumberjanes” makes a new ongoing, you pay attention. A magical conspiracy surrounding mythical creatures who live among us sounds like great fun, plus there’s a contribution from Kate Leth! WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?

Ducktales #0 ($3.99) – I’m so super excited for the cartoon you guys, I can’t even tell you. Hopefully this will tide me over until I can binge the new show.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #17 ($3.99) – I’ve got a couple issues to catch up on with this series, but with the origin series “Go Go Power Rangers” out next week and the October solicitations teasing a team of Rangers from the sixties, I’m eager to dive back in.

Total: $20.95 – I’m slightly over, but it’s a strong week! I’ve not even mentioned Shaolin Cowboy, Winnebago Graveyard, Batman or Spectacular Spider-Man!

Matthew’s Picks:

Generation Gone #1 ($4.99) – It’s been a while since I’ve read a new Ales Kot book. Doesn’t feel like the time to pass on it.

Royal City #5 ($3.99) – Don’t you dare miss a beat from Jeff Lemire’s current solo title.

Royals #5, US Avengers #8, Ultimates 2 #9 ($3.99 each) – Al Ewing continues to be my favorite Marvel writer because of these books, and isn’t it so convenient that they’re all being published in the same week? Lucky you.

Total: $20.95 – If you’re not into all Al Ewing’s books you can swap one of them out for “Descender” #22, the beginning of the “Descender” “event” thing; I grab that book in trade, so whatever works best for you.

Brian’s Picks:

Aquaman #26 (#3.99) – Dan Abnett’s run on “Aquaman” has already set it up as one of the all-time great Arthur stories, but adding Stjepan Šejić to the mix makes it almost unfairly great.

Curse Words #6 ($3.99) – The funniest book on the stands – a gonzo wizarding adventure.

Royal City #5 ($3.99) – Jeff Lemire does great work all over comics; he never feels more at home than he does when doing his own work, however.

Super Sons #6 ($3.99) – The Brave and the Bold book we got is so much better than the one we deserve. Jorge Jimenez for President.

Total: $15.96

Justin Beeson’s Picks:

Scalped Book 1 ($24.99) – Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra’s opus has been on my to-read list for years, especially after loving what they did with “The Goddamned.” A new trade collection seems like a great time to start.

Total: $24.99. Some weeks, you just need to splurge.
