Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Matt Lune’s Picks:

The Seeds #1 ($3.99) – I love Ann Nocenti, and her pairing with David Aja seems like a dream come true. The solicit is bonkers and seems to imply a series that is all over the place, but I have faith that this creative team can bring out something special.

Scales and Scoundrels #11 ($3.99) – I love this series, and I love the growing fanbase that’s building around this series. Since issue 1 I’ve been singing its praises, and I get the feeling that this series is only just getting started.

Paper Girls #23 ($3.99) – If there’s one book that I can see myself reading again and again, it’s “Paper Girls.” Partly it’s the aesthetic, partly it’s the heart and humor. Mostly it’s because it’s filled with timey-wimey ridiculousness that pushes multiple re-reads.

Paradiso #6 ($3.99) – I’m digging this crazy book and it’s deeply labyrinthine, living city. I’ve long ago strapped in for the journey this book is taking me on, and I can’t wait to see where it’s taking me.

Giant Days #41 ($3.99) – I can’t believe a book that’s 41 issues in can still feel this energized and fresh, and yet every time I crack the cover of “Giant Days” that’s exactly what I get. I feel like these characters are actually friends of mine at this point, and while I’m not quite sure what that says about me, this is definitely a book that welcomes you in.

Total: $19.95 – Almost all of my favorite series have new issues out this week, I’m so excited! I’m also intrigued by Marvel’s “Infinity Wars” event, but I recoil at the $5.99 price tag!

Kevin’s Picks:

Captain America #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of this book, while more of an opener than really digging into everything Coates probably has planned for the book, was nonetheless a great debut. I am all here for the deep analysis Coates is going to be doing about the current state of America and “The Dream.”

Shade, The Changing Woman ($3.99) – This has been my favorite of the Young Animal books and I’ll be sad to see it go. What a beautiful, non-sensical, existential book about what it must be like to have a body. Bye bye for now.

Green Arrow #43 ($3.99) – The Bensons’ begin a new book this week with their run on “Green Arrow.” While “Batgirl and the Birds of Prey” wasn’t perfect by any means, it got better issue after issue. The direction too that Ollie seems to be taking post-“No Justice” is also really interesting. Javi Fernandez is a great artist, and seems a great choice for another street level hero. Plus, all the Alex Maleev covers have been gorgeous so far.

Batman #52 ($3.99) – Dammit. This book got good again.

Death of the Inhumans ($3.99) – WHY’D YOU FUCK WITH LOCKJAW YOU HEARTLESS MONSTER DONNY CATES! NOW I HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK AND HOPE THAT PRECIOUS BOY SOMEHOW LIVES!…..alright I’m calm now. Seriously though, lot of death, lot of intrigue going forward.

Total: $19.95

Kate’s Picks:

Leviathan #1 ($3.99) – While I have yet to finish John Layman’s “Chew” I do love his wit, and I’m eager to see what he brings to this new series.

Long Lost Book 2 #1 ($3.99) – I’m a sucker for Southern horror (I am reviewing Outcast for Multiversity, after all), and this series did hook me in with its first cycle, so I’m curious to see where the story of Piper and Frances as they try to come back to the world of reality goes from here.

Continued below

Shade the Changing Woman #6 ($3.99) – The first of the Young Animal titles comes to a close, and I remain hopeful that the line will come back, or we’ll start to see some of those characters in other DC books in the future.

The Wilds #4 ($3.99) – If you liked Vita Ayala’s “Submerged” (which debuted last week), you’ll want to check out her other series, which is due to wrap up very soon.

Total: $15.96

Vince’s Picks:

The Seeds #1 ($3.99) – Ann Nocenti and David Aja book launching the “Berger’s Books” line at Dark Horse? I’ll buy that book every time. But even if you have no idea what any of that means, I feel like that stark, minimalist cover is going to at least draw a few curious comics shop purveyors to take a closer look. Wonderful design work!

Batman #52 ($3.99) – I can’t believe I’m recommending an issue of this run, but here we are. “Batman” #51 was essentially what I wanted Tom King’s Batman to be all along: pulpy and willing to bring out the idealism of the character. It doesn’t hurt that the great Lee Weeks continues to top himself on art duties.

Adventures of the Super Sons #1 ($3.99) – Carlo Barberi has kicked around DC Rebirth for a while, but “Adventures of the Super Sons” feels like a perfect fit for his art style. “Super Sons” was one of DC’s strongest titles of the rebirth era, so it’s nice to see it continue in some form.

Total: $11.97

Mark’s pick:

“Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” ($17.99)— I rather enjoy swashbuckling adventures, and I haven’t yet taken a look at Tony Cliff’s Delilah Dirk series yet. With the third book coming out this week, now seems like a good time to check it out. First Second’s got a pretty good track record with me, so I’m happy to go in blind, but if that’s not your thing, there’s a considerable preview on the Delilah Dirk website.

Total: $17.99 – Taking a swing on something new this week. Wish me luck.

Nick’s Pick:

Gravity Falls: Lost Legends HC ($19.99)Gravity Falls finally comes to comics! Written fully by show creator Alex Hirsch, the book is sure to retain the show’s blend of humor, heart, intrigue, and endless creativity. And with a mixture of artists including people from the show’s art department, former fan artists, and indie cartoonists, there’s no doubt that the book will look great, too.

Total: $19.99.
