Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles. That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week.
Daredevil #2 ($2.99) – I was wary about the first issue of this new volume, but I soon found out that said wariness was misplaced. Seriously, the first issue was everything that I could have wanted, without knowing that I wanted it. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how excited I am for the latest issue.
Journey Into Mystery #626 ($2.99) – Dear Marvel: can Kieron Gillen write at least one Thor-related title for the rest of his life? You can use physical force if you want, I won’t tell anyone. This is how Marvel’s Asgardian characters should be at all times, and the incredible art by Doug Braithwaite doesn’t hurt the book at all. Kid Loki 4evr.
Captain America #2 ($3.99) – I loved the past few years of BuckyCap, but it does feel good to have Steve back in the star-spangled scales. It feels even better to still have Ed Brubaker onboard as writer, considering he’s what got me reading Cap – and mainstream Marvel in general. McNiven is the quintessential icing on the cake, and while his art in Nemesis wasn’t as good as I’m used to from him, he really stepped it up in the first issue of this new volume. Sure, the renumbering was an obvious money grab, but that doesn’t make the contents bad by any means.
Invincible Iron Man #507 ($3.99) – Forget the haters. I love what Matt Fraction is doing with Tony Stark these days. I’ve been reading this book since its beginning, and I’m not going to stop until it ends – or, at least, until Fraction leaves. Plus, who doesn’t like getting drunk with dwarves and forging god-killing weapons? Losers, that’s who.
X-Men: Schism #3 ($3.99) – We began to see the first bits of the titular schism in the last issue, and I’m sure that will only further develop in this issue, especially considering how last issue ended. The first two issues were very solid. I don’t see why this one would be any different. In Aaron I trust.
Total: $17.95
Ultimate Fallout #6 ($3.99) – Alright. Let’s do this. Finale – GO!
Gladstone’s School For World Conquerors #4 ($2.99) – And people say there are no good all ages comics out there! Those people are nuts. This comic is amazing.
DMZ #68 ($2.99) – We’re in the final arc now. If you miss this, you must be crazy.
Hulk #39 ($2.99) – Jeff Parker is writing the Hulk! You should be reading the Hulk!
Journey Into Mystery #626 ($2.99) – This is by far my favorite thing Kieron Gillen is writing at Marvel. Loki FTW, and such. (But hey, if you aren’t a Loki kinda guy or gal, Gillen has Generation Hope #10 and Uncanny X-Men #542 out this week – mix and match as you please!)
Schism #3 ($3.99) – It hasn’t been that great so far, but hey, it’s Jason Aaron. It’ll pay off.
Total: $19.94
Josh’s Picks
Generation Hope #10 ($2.99) – Despite the fact that his Uncanny X-Men (also out this week) got edged by Fraction’s Iron Man, this book is truly one of my favorites of his. No one quite writes teen angst in such a readable way, and since the end of the first arc (which really just cleaned up Fraction’s mess) this book has really hammered home how difficult and exciting it has to be to be a young mutant in the Marvel Universe. Just excellent, excellent stuff here.
Journey Into Mystery #626 ($2.99) – More Kierony Gilliony goodness this week, this book is easily one of the best books Marvel publishes right now. Gillen and Braithwaite actually got me to care about all that fantasy blah blah realms and fairies stuff, and that is a HUGE accomplishment.
The Walking Dead #88 ($2.99) – I really can’t NOT buy this book at this point. When it comes to sheer, 100% hardcore humanism in modern comics, no book really touches The Walking Dead. Also zombies.
Daredevil #2 ($2.99) – Bought the first issue on a lark, mostly out of love of the cover and was delivered with one of the bigger surprise hits of the year so far. Yeah I know, some people are pissed at this throwback to the happy days of Daredevil, but I honestly never gravitated to the DECADES of “grim and gritty” we got from the character, so I’m willing to give Waid a shot with this.
Invincible Iron Man #507 ($3.99) – Easily the best book Matt Fraction writes for Marvel at the moment (you heard me) and only getting better as Tony Stark slowly deconstructs everything that made him a decent human being over the last few years. And by that I mean stumbles around drunk with a bunch of Dwarves (you heard me).
X-Men: Schism #3 ($3.99) – Not quite sure I dig the current story, but so far I like where I know it to be going. Also it’s Jason Aaron, so somebody is gonna get stabbed in a way to make me smile/laugh.
