Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles. That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week.
Walt’s Picks:
Punisher #1 ($3.99) – Normally, I don’t really care for Frank Castle when he’s in the 616. If you ask me, he just doesn’t work unless something crazy is done with him (see: Frankencastle). If anyone can make me reconsider, though, it’s Greg Rucka. Since he wrapped up the first part of Stumptown and his runs on DC’s two flagship titles (Action and ‘Tec, duh), I’ve been waiting to see him on either an ongoing or a mini. And here he is! It takes a creator I love to get me reading a book focusing on a character I dislike. Surprise: Rucka is a creator I love.
Zorro Rides Again #1 ($3.99) – To paraphrase myself from when I Friday Rec’d Matt Wagner and Francesco Francavilla’s run on Zorro, Zorro is Batman, but cooler. I assume that this will be wrapping up the story of that ongoing, but even if it doesn’t Wagner-written anything is worth buying. Sure, it’s a shame that Francavilla isn’t on board, but Esteve Pols is a very talented artist as well. Give it a chance! You’ll love it! Probably!
Severed #1 ($2.99) – Man, I don’t know much about this. What I do know is that it is horror comic that is being co-written by Scott Snyder, and that Image has been putting out great new series lately. That’s good enough for me to at least try the first issue.
Moon Knight #4 ($3.99) – Everything that I have been saying about this still applies. Bendis doing what he does best. Maleev doing what he does best. Schizophrenia and action. There’s no reason to not get this.
Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 ($3.99) – I’ll play your game, Marvel.
Total: $18.95
And yes, I did purposefully make it so my write-ups gradually decreased in size. Don’t judge me.
Matt’s Picks:
SHIELD #2 ($2.99) – SHIELD is by far my favorite work Jonathan Hickman has done for Marvel so far. Absolutely fantastic exploration of the Marvel universe and its history in a way only that only Jonathan Hickman can do.
Ultimate Fallout #4 ($3.99) – I’ve been rather enjoying the welcoming of the new guard of the Ultimate Marvel U. This issue brings us the new Ultimate Spider-Man, and if I can make it through Tuesday and Wednesday without reading any spoilers from USA Today and/or any other site that posts about it, all will be gravy!
Punisher #1 ($3.99) – Greg Rucka returns to comics! And he’s back for some crime as only the Punisher can deal with! What more could you possibly want?
Rachel Rising #1 ($3.99) – I have never bought a Terry Moore comic not in trade/hardcover, but he’s such a consistent creator that it bears noting this will probably be worth following. I’m tentative on this one personally, but it still intrigues me more than some other comics this week.
Secret Six #36 ($2.99) – I’ve been very openly negative about the whole DC reboot thing specifically because of issues like this. There is no real reason Secret Six should end because – and not just to repeat what everyone else is saying – it is by far and large one of their best titles. Its such a shame that it also isn’t making it into the relaunch, but here’s hoping Simone sends the gang off with a proper salute.

Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 ($3.99) – I mean, the concept of someone other than Peter Parker existing under that Spider-Man mask is not a new concept, but to my knowledge its never been done (2099 notwithstanding) with Peter Parker actually in the ground, which makes this particular debut issue that much more exciting. Too bad by the time most of you read this article it’ll be spoiled already.
Wolverine #13 ($3.99) – One of the best books Marvel puts out. The extent to which Jason Aaron just GETS Logan, his motivations and his aspirations just makes this book one joy after the next for this long time Wolverine fan.
SHIELD #2 ($2.99) – Another fantastically underrated book in the Marvel stable, this book has become Jonathan Hickman’s sandbox to play with everything he loves about history and the Marvel Universe and the more importantly, the places they intersect. Comics don’t get smarter or more fun than this.
Punisher #1 ($3.99) – I’ve never actively followed a Punisher book for more than a few issues, but with Greg Rucka at the helm I’d put decent money on me sticking with this one. On top of that, the other two members of Marvel’s “Big Shots” relaunch initiative (Moon Knight and Daredevil) both debuted fantastically, so clearly Marvel put elbo grease into this one.
Sweet Tooth #24 ($2.99) – Breaking up the Marvel sweep of this week is little Sweet Tooth, well past its second year of being one of my absolute all-time favorite comics. Jeff Lemire is creating something truly epic here, and I’m honored to have been on board since the beginning.
