Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/25/2019)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:

“Strikeforce” #1 ($3.99) – Love the creators, love this team. Angela, Blade, Wiccan, Spider-Woman, Winter Solider, Daimon Hellstrom, and Monica Rambeau is a wild bunch of heroes to combat all the weird and nasty stuff in the Marvel Universe. I’m in it for Tini’s Monster Mash.

“The White Trees” #2 ($4.99) – I’d buy anything with Chip Zdarsky, Kris Anka, and Matt Wilson working together at this point and I loved the first issue of this big, queer, fantasy romp.

“Powers of X” #5 ($4.99) – I don’t really have anymore words of praise. Just buy the damn book.

“SFSX” #1 ($3.99) – Two Image Comics books in the same week isn’t usual for me, but I was super excited about this book when it was going to be published at Vertigo, so I’ll definitely be picking up the first issue!

Total: $17.96

Kyle’s Picks:

“Revenger and the Fog” GN ($18.95) – If you have Netflix and and enjoy great TV, you have probably watched The End of the Fucking World. Hopefully, that also means you are familiar with the comic work of the man behind that story, Charles Forsman. With “The End of the Fucking World” and “I Am Not Ok With This”, Charles shows off his amazing talent at telling coming of age stories for the angry misunderstood youth. He is able to translate story telling proficiency to other genres as well. “Revenger” is exploitation and violent crime comics at its finest. Charles even alters his art style for a more gritty look and feel. Hopefully the success of “TEotFW” series brings new readers to the equally fantastic “Revenger.”

Total: $18.95. I would’ve recommended more, but I went over last week so I will follow the rules this week. That said get The Plot ($3.99) from Vault comics. It’s fucking dope horror with great art from Josh Hixson. That does not count as a recommend though, so don’t add it to the total. Who put that in bold?

Total: $22.94. God Dammit.

Mark’s Picks:

“Frogcatchers” # ($22.99)— I can’t say much about this one. Yet again, this is a book I’ve been looking forward to simply because of who’s creating it. I already know I’m going to pick it up, so I’ve avoided reading anything about it―Jeff Lemire writing and drawing, that’s all I need to know. Best of all, it’s an OGN, so it’s a nice concentrated dose.

“Manor Black” #3 ($3.99)— This is only a four-issue miniseries, but there’s clearly more Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, and Tyler Crook want to do with this series and boy do you ever feel it in this issue. “Manor Black” has such a large cast and we’ve barely even met most of the characters so far. Hopefully as this mini comes to an end, we’ll get some news about what’s in store for the future.

Total: $26.98. Third week in a row going over. I promise I’ll behave next week.

Kate’s Picks:

“Harleen” #1 ($7.99) – We all know the Harley Quinn/Joker love story has some very problematic elements. This series sounds like it will give more of a foundation to the backstory of how that love story started. It’s not going to change my mind on Harley and Joker, but at the very least I’ll have a deeper context of how they came to be.

“SFSX (Safe Sex)” #1 ($3.99) – This looks to fill that “Sex Criminals” shaped hole in my heart. Definitely not one for the kids. Or one I’m going to read on the train.

Total: $11.98. Save that money because NYCC is coming….
