Comics Should Be Cheap (9/30/20)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Wonder Woman 1984 One-Shot ($3.99) – Even though this movie is now set for Christmas Day (but given the news of the postponement of Black Widow, most likely will end up in 2021), I’m still excited for Diana adventures in the backdrop of the greed is good era of the 1980s.

Department of Truth #1 ($3.99) – I do question the value of releasing a story that proves the world’s conspiracy theories are true in this peak misinformation era, but if it ends up being a tool to educate on the dangers of fake news and the importance of fact-checking, I’m here for it.

Immortal Hulk Threshing Place #1 ($4.99) – I am probably the only Multiversity staffer not on the Immortal Hulk train yet, so this feels like a good place to board and see what everyone’s talking about.

Stranger Things Science Camp #1 ($3.99) – The best part of Stranger Things after Eleven gets his own series. Soundtrack to The Neverending Story not included, unfortunately.

Total: $16.96

Vince’s Picks:

Shang-Chi #1 ($3.99) – I’ll check out anything Gene Luen Yang has a hand in. He simply doesn’t miss. I don’t think this is going to be in the same ballpark as the immaculately realized “Superman Smashes the Klan”, but if it’s on the same level as his more traditional superhero serial “New Super-Man” run, we’ll be cooking with gas. It seems that no matter what he sets out to do, we end up with a carefully-considered story that is at least in part about relevant social issues, and I expect “Shang-Chi” to contain some of that too.

The Joker Warzone #1 ($5.99) – I’m sorry, I know it’s not cool to have this on my list, but you know what is cool? James Stokoe draws a massive swath of Joker goon death and destruction across Gotham. Forget everything else, this is what you’re paying admission to see.

Dark Nights: Death Metal: Multiverse’s End #1 ($5.99) – James Tynion takes the Green Lantern Corps and some fan favorite DC Extra-Multiversal characters, including the Justice Incarnate team from the mind of Grant Morrison, and knocks it all out of the park while adding a few guffaws and gasps every few pages. Juan Gedeon embraces the looniness of the premise and manages to even wring so strange emotions out of characters like Captain Carrot. If you’re looking for goofy fun out of “Death Metal”, this one-shot captures that perhaps even better than the main event does. It’s easily the best tie-in so far.

Total: $15.97

Christopher’s Picks:

Stranger Things: Science Camp #1 ($3.99) – It’s great we’re getting a new series focusing on one of the leads doing something we know happened on the show, although the idea Dustin and Suzie encountered a serial killer when they met may be a bit much. Anyway, this should be a fun throwback to ’80s slasher films.

Daredevil Vol. 4 ($15.99) – Been loving catching up on Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil run, which maintains the high standards of most Matt Murdock runs before it, and this’ll be no different I imagine.

Total: $19.98

Jason’s Picks:

John Constantine: Hellblazer #10 ($3.99) – With only a few issues left I grow ever sadder each month, yet I cannot contain my excitement for what I believe is one of the best ongoings DC Comics had for awhile.

John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. 1 ($19.99) – I can’t sing the praise enough for this series, and would highly suggest this TPB to anyone I know. Sadly with the cancellation of the series, the sales of this first volume mean even more. That said, you need to purchase this fantastic first volume for everyone in your family. I can’t stress enough how amazing this series has been.

Total: $23.98. You could say it’s a hell of a week! Right? Because it’s a double dose of “Hellblazer.” Well, I thought that joke was funny when I said it out loud. Nonetheless, I know I went over the budget, but, you seriously need to pick the series up!
