Comics Should Be Cheap (9/6/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Pick:

Saving Sunshine ($14.99): Saadia Faruqi and Shazleen Khan’s OGN follows two bickering young siblings during a family trip to Florida, who wind up becoming the guardians of a sick turtle. (Man, turtles are cute, why wasn’t I into TMNT as a kid again?) Yes, it’s a children’s graphic novel, but it’s really nice to see positive Muslim representation for kids that isn’t in the fantasy genre either.

Total: $14.99 – there’s a lot of great looking books that would’ve sent me way over the $20 mark too this week, including Wendy Xu’s “The Infinity Particle.”

Kate’s Pick:

Where is Anne Frank? ($25.00): Yes, I went over again. But it’s another book work breaking the budget for. This new graphic novel is the retelling of the story of Anne Frank from the perspective of the imaginary friend in her diary – Kitty, who retraces Anne and Margot’s steps to their fatal end. Weaving in a modern day look at the European refugee crisis, this book adds another dimension to Anne’s life and legacy. With anti-Semitism still very much alive and well in the United States, Anne’s story is one that needs to be told again, and again, and again.

Total: $25.00 – yes over the budget once more, but for a very important reason.

Johnny’s Pick:

Untold Tales of I Hate Fairlyand #3 ($3.99): I really do love anthology-type miniseries that allow other creators to play in universes that have a very singular voice, and for the third straight month I’m picking up this surprisingly fun and chaotic sidestep for Skottie Young’s “I Hate Fairlyand” series. This issue features brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, as well another story from Dean Rankine, who is an *excellent* humor writer, and an always eye-catching cover from Michael Del Mundo. You can tell how beloved Young is as a creator by the talent willing to hop on board and have some fun with his characters, and this issue is a prime example.

Total: $3.99 – just a single issue! Perfect time to hit the back issue bins for buried treasures!
