Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/14/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Kaijumax Season 2 #4 ($3.99) – It feels like roughly a million years since the last issue came out, but that’s becoming an increasingly common thing in creator owned comics. Still, “Kaijumax” is such a fun and enjoyable read that I’m okay with some gaps here and there. After the relatively touching story of last issue, I’m sure this issue will feature all the drama and twists that have made the book such a unique thing so far, along with all the wonderful, and often hilarious, way the Kaiju play into the story.

Weavers #5 ($3.99) – The mystery of how Sid came to be caught up in a bar explosion has been central to “Weavers” and that mystery seems to be unraveling. Also interesting is the history of the actual Weaver spiders, as explained some in previous issues. The mix of mystery/crime story with a really solid sci-fi concept is working well for me so far.

Briggs Land #2 ($3.99) – As I said last month, I’m a sucker for a Brian Wood book. Him writing this and developing the TV show based on it at the same time is an interesting thing and should be interesting to see how they influence each other. Still, Wood is often a writer that reads better in trade and I’m afraid that may end up being the way with this book.

Birthright #19 ($2.99) – “Birthright” continues to be a solid read each month. With the revelations of the last issue, things are really getting dangerous and weird for Mikey and his family.

Total: $14.96

Mark’s Picks:

Southern Cross #7 ($3.99) — Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger’s sci-fi mystery returns at last. If you read the first season, I don’t need to sell this book to you. If you haven’t read it, pick up the trade collection; you won’t regret it.

Harrow County #16 ($3.99) — An excellent end to a transformative arc for the series. This really is my favourite comic out there, and it’s just getting better as it goes on. I definitely need to buy a page from this series…

Avatar: The Last Airbender—North and South #1 ($10.99) — I’m hoping this is the Katara–Sokka-centric arc I’ve been waiting for. Since the series launched, these two characters have been very present, but always in supporting roles, and I’d love to see them as the POV characters. I’m very fond of this universe, and Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru managed to capture that spark that I love about the show. Plus, 80 pages each installment is more my kind of comic.

Total: $18.97. ‘Tis a good week.

Matt’s Picks:

Ghosts ($10.99) – Your nieces and nephews probably have been waiting for this book for ages. It’s probably already sold more than everything Marvel and DC released this year put together. Most importantly, it’s a comic that’s garnering all kinds of attention, delivered by a cartoonist who’s continually evolving.

Doom Patrol #1 ($3.99) – I finally understand why a certain group of kids at my high school would lose their minds at the prospect of a new My Chemical Romance album. Because Gerard Way has become a writer with a deep knowledge of comics and who delivers scripts worth paying attention to. Nick Derington contributes the art.

Kaijumax: Season Two #4 ($3.99) – Is it just me or has it seemed like it’s been a long time since the last issue of this came out?

Total: $18.97

Ken’s Picks:

Gotham Academy: Second Semester #1 ($2.99): Don’t got anything witty to say other than: It’s back. Get on it.

Detective Comics #940 ($2.99): Hoo boy. Thinking more on this book and where it has led to with this final issue of the first arc has made me incredibly nervous in not-so-good ways. At this point I just want to get through this issue and not have to think: “You fucked it.” Please let me be able to do that.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #11 ($3.99): With “Labyrinth” over, this book has proven to be one of the better Valiant titles. This issue marks the beginning of a new story arc, so give it a shot.

Total: $9.97
