Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Paybacks #1 ($3.99) – Donny Cates and Eliot Rahal are probably my favorite writing duo in comics. The two are self-described BFFs and they both know how to have fun, and it shows through big time in their work. Pairing them with Geoff Shaw, who worked with Cates on “Buzzkill”, and having them play in the universe established in “Buzzkill” only makes it that much better. “Paybacks” looks to be both a ton of fun and a quality story and you better believe I’m along for the ride.
D4VE2 #1 ($3.99) – Besides having some of the best hair in comics, Ryan Ferrier is also just damn funny. He and Valentin Ramon made one of the most unique comics out there when “D4VE” first hit stands. Now, it’s back for more robotic mayhem as D4VE must once again figure out how to save 34RTH and salvage his relationship with his son 5COTTY. It’s a weird mix of mid-life crisis and comedy, but it’s always worth the read.
Manifest Destiny #17 ($2.99) – I know I talk about this book every week it’s out, but it’s too good not to. Dingess and Roberts are making one of the most consistently good books on the stands, and for just $2.99, it’s hard to beat it. Just go buy it so I can stop talking about it.
Total: $10.97

Mark’s Pick:
Step Aside, Pops ($19.99) — A new “Hark! A Vagrant” collection! Don’t get me wrong, I love reading Kate Beaton’s comics online… but it is so much better in a hardcover volume. Sure you can curl up with a tablet, but it’s just not the same.
I wonder if Sexy Batman will make an appearance. And tiny Hermione. Oh, and Canadian politicians!
This is gonna be great.
Total: $19.99. There were so many good books this week, but I had to pick this one. Sorry “BPRD”, “Rat Queens”, “Southern Cross”, and “Sex Criminals”.

Brian’s Picks:
B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth #135 ($3.50) – The best comic on the stands, month after month, and it is rocketing towards its conclusion. Plus Laurence Campbell is drawing it this month, so come on – what are you waiting for?
Martian Manhunter #4 ($2.99) – Especially now that DC is cancelling some of its best books (foolishly), this is going to be in the conversation for ‘best big 2 book’ come January. Unless the bastards cancel this, too.
Bloodshot Reborn #6 ($3.99) – A new arc, a new opportunity to jump on.
Prez #4 ($2.99) – This better actually get its second 6-issue miniseries, because this is damn good.
King #2 ($2.99) – Josh Fialkov and Bernard Chang are killing it on this weird, funhouse mirror Los Angeles story.
Total: $16.46

Keith’s Picks:
Batman Vol. 7: Endgame ($24.99) or Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder Deluxe Edition ($49.99) – Two collections of great series by writer Scott Snyder are being released this week. If you haven’t been reading “Batman” (and even if you have been keeping up), it’s worth it to have the best series around on your bookcase. If you want something more massive and more expensive, DC is releasing a deluxe edition of Snyder’s Swamp Thing run that includes work by such stunning artists as Yanick Paquette and Francesco Francavilla. Snyder is one of the best writers working today and these are essential collections.
Total: $24.99 or $49.99
