Comics Should Be Cheap! (9/7/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

The Great Divide #1 ($3.99) – Dynamite can be really hit or miss with their non-licensed stuff, but “The Great Divide” looks extremely interesting. A world where human contact leads to excruciating death sounds like something worth checking out. Plus, the issue comes with a free song download, which is more than most $4 comics can say.

The Flintstones #3 ($3.99) – “The Flintstones”, surprisingly, is my favorite of the current slate of “modern” Hanna-Barbera books. It’s dealt with some really serious subject matter, like vapid consumerism, PTSD, and religion, and actually handled it quite well. This issue promises an alien invasion, so maybe we’ll get to see the Great Gazoo and see how he interacts with all this.

Eclipse #1 ($3.99) – Kinda like with “The Great Divide” above, “Eclipse” sells me on the premise and that’s all I need. Fatal sunlight and intrigue involving solar power seems like a solid premise for a book. Plus, that Image I generally means good things.

The Walking Dead #158 ($2.99) – Neegan making some big moves and the Whisperers going to war. “The Walking Dead” never ceases to be full of drama.

Total: $14.96

Mark’s Picks:

Rise of the Black Flame ($3.99) — I absolutely loved this issue. I had no idea what to expect going in, since this miniseries doesn’t feature any pre-established characters in lead roles. It was excellent. Chris Roberson’s writing a series that’s unlike anything else in the Hellboy Universe and yet it fits in perfectly. And Christopher Mitten makes this book his own.

Giant Days ($3.99) — I am utterly addicted to this series. I kind of wish I discovered it later though, just so I could read like 40 issues in one sitting…

Paper Girls #9 ($2.99) — The perfect title to read while I wait for season 2 of Stranger Things.

Total: 10.97. As is usual, I have my eye on more than just the books on this list, but all the other items I’m looking at blow the $20 budget.

Matt’s Picks:

Angel Catbird ($14.99) – I’ve read this already, and it’s just as weird and wonderful as it sounds.

Sun Bakery #3 ($5.99) – This is rapidly becoming my favorite comics anthology out right now. Corey Lewis is restless and throws all his energy onto the page. This book is filled with some imaginative, wild, and just great bunch of comics.

Total: $20.98.
