Comics Should Be Cheap (1/11/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Black Cloak #1 ($4.99): 2023 is off to a great start for my pull list as this is an instant add. Eisner winner Kelly Thompson teams with artist Meredith McClaren on a sci-fi fantasy story that, by all appearances, is my total jam. Catching vibes from sources like “Blade Runner” and “Saga,” this book, propelled by McClaren’s wonderfully minimalist art style, promises to be at the top of my TBR pile! And dig that Peach Momoko variant cover!

Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Three #1 ($3.99): It appears that in my middle years I cannot for the life of me keep track of continuity with the Marvel or DC Universes to save my soul, so to feed my constant Batman cravings I turn to more viable options. This series expands upon the Batman: The Animated Series universe in very uncomplicated ways, offering a more palatable, easier-to-digest canon for my delicate mind-stomach. Mind-stomach? Anyways, the series is helmed by truly legendary Batman creators Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, with pitch-perfect art from Jordan Gibson.

Human Target #10 ($4.99): I did not have “Greg Smallwood draws G’Nort” on my 2023 bingo card, and yet here we are.

Total: $13.97 – easing my wallet (and yours!) into the new year! You’re welcome!

Christopher’s Pick:

Carmilla: The First Vampire ($19.99): Amy Chu and Soo Lee’s new graphic novel, published by Berger Books, relocates the early lesbian vampire tale to ’90s Chinatown, Manhattan, allowing Chu (in her own words) to explore “cultural identity, gentrification, homophobia and racism.” Can’t wait to check it out.

Total: $19.99

Kate’s Picks:

Sandman Universe Dead Boy Detectives #1 ($3.99): One of the things I loved about “The Sandman” when I read it for the Summer Comics Binge last year was its storytelling potential – – rich characters that take can take the main story in so many different directions, or even hold their own as the star of their own series. This is the case with the latter, featuring the stars of “The Sandman” #25 taking on a very scary place indeed: Hollywood.

Star Wars The Mandalorian #7 ($4.99): I know this series is essentially retelling some stories from the TV series, but it’s fun to revisit while I wait for the new season in March.

Monsters of Metal Krampus in Concert #1 ($6.66): Although this may have been better timed for last month to tie into Krampus’s Advent folklore, I will not say no to more Krampus and more metal. Also, that price? Does give one a chuckle or two.

Total: $15.64
