Comics Should Be Cheap (1/18/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Immortal Sergeant #1 ($3.99): This mini-series sees the return of the “I Kill Giants” team, writer Joe Kelly and artist Ken Niimura. What looks to be a potentially silly premise of a grizzled retired detective taking his anxiety-riddled adult son with him on the trail of a cold case file, in the hands of these two creators I think there will be a lot of depth and heart, making for another multi-faceted story worth your time (same as “I Kill Giants”). Niimura’s recent “Umami” was an Eisner winner worth the accolades, and I’m pretty much sold on anything this creator touches.

Nightwing #100 ($6.99):I haven’t kept up with this title in some time, but Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo have solidified the book as a top-tier comic in the DC roster. Joining Redondo on this issue is a bevy of former “Nightwing” artist alumns, including personal favorite artist Scott McDaniel, all here to wish Dick a happy anniversary. A gorgeous cover and new Bludhaven headquarters are in store for readers, and I can’t wait to see where Tom Taylor and team take us going forward! (Titans are Go!)

The New Champion of SHAZAM! #4 ($3.99): I want Doc Shaner cloned so many times that he can either do a regular monthly book or all the books. A real Crisis of Infinite Shaners going. Point is, he’s a wonderful comics storyteller and each issue we do get from him is a treasure, and writer Josie Campbell has given him such a great script to work with. What a fun series!

Total: $14.97 – with a little extra left to buy a nice hot coffee or tea to enjoy your comics with during these cold winter months!

Kate’s Picks:

Art Brut #2 ($3.99): The creative team from “Ice Cream Man” – – W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo – – is what initially piqued my interest. The combination of superhero stories in the art world is what has me, a former Museum of Modern Art volunteer and alumni of one of New York City’s art schools (though my degree is not in art) has me coming back for more. This series debuted during our holiday break, so I’ll also be picking up issue #1 to see how much of “Ice Cream Man” shapes this story.

Shirtless Bear-Fighter Vol. 2 #6 ($3.99): It’s the penultimate issue of flapjack eating superhero madness, so I will treasure it as long as I have it.

Deadpool #3 ($3.99): This sounds like a Deadpool – Alien mashup with things springing out of Wade’s stomach, which you know is going to go about as well as you would expect, which is not well at all.

Total: $11.97. Also of note this week is the collected trade of “Public Domain,” a series that took several awards in our 2022 Year In Review, including Best New Series. If our praise of the title has you intrigued, this is a prime opportunity to discover more.

Mark’s Pick:

Pearl of the Sea ($19.99) – This is the first of two comics from South Africa’s Triggerfish animation studio to be published by Catalyst Press. I’ve not read this one, but I was a backer for their first graphic novel, “KARIBA” (which will be getting its wide release later this year), so I’m curious to see this next project, even if it is from a new creative team. Triggerfish’s stated goal is to bring “graphic novels with nuanced illustrative narratives centred on African history, mythology, and folklore to readers worldwide.” And if they continue to be as good as “KARIBA,” then they’re definitely a studio to watch.

Total: $19.99.
