Comics Should Be Cheap (1/31/24)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Pick:

Somna #2 ($8.99): I know $8.99 can be a hard sell, but considering the previous issue had fifty story pages (more than double a standard issue), and oversized pages at that, it’s absolutely worth it. If the previous issue is anything to go by, Tula Lotay and Becky Cloonan are going to give us a story worth taking your time with too.

Total: $8.99. A small week, but that’s hardly unusual for the fifth Wednesday of the month.

Johnny’s Picks:

Somna #2 ($8.99): I’m sure I’m not alone recommending this dynamite offering from publisher DSTLRY, with a beautiful cardstock cover and lavish oversized pages. Lotay and Cloonan are hitting a scorching home run with this book, a stylized erotic horror comic for the ages. This one is a can’t miss.

Avengers Inc. #5 ($3.99): The final issue of this series that was never really given a chance to flourish. Sales analytics are the *bleeping* worst sometimes. Yeah, I know Marvel is running a business, it’s just a damned shame when business practices compete against art that wants to take its time – money wins every time. Writer Al Ewing and artist Leonard Kirk had something special here – damned shame to see it end so soon.

Total: $12.98 – if you have the extra coin lying around, I highly recommend the “Miss Truesdale & The Fall of Hyperborea” trade paperback, out this week for $24.99. A savvy adventure series with some brilliant cartooning by Jesse Lonergan.

Kate’s Picks:

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #40 ($4.99): The end for one of the longest-running Star Wars comic series, but I do hope that we see Aphra make appearances throughout the line sooner rather than later.

Fighting to Belong: A History of Asian Americans and Pacific Americans ($11.95): While I wish this graphic novel tracing the contributions of Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Americans came out during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, you can get a head start on observing for 2024 with this graphic novel.

Total: $16.94 – and if you’ve got the extra change in between the couch cushions, pick up “DC Power” #1, which has a story from sci-fi titan N.K. Jemisin.
