Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Picks:
Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #1 ($4.99): Marvel are launching several series during Black History Month, including John Jennings and Valentine De Landro’s miniseries that will resurrect a supporting character from the Sentinel of the Spaceways’ first solo comic. Talk about history!
Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #1 ($3.99): Speaking of characters who’ve been a long time coming: Blade’s daughter has been in the works at Marvel for a long time, having been originally announced for 2015 before someone realized she should maybe have a Black creative team. So, at long last, she’s finally here.
Total: $8.98

Kate’s Picks:
DC’s Harley Quinn Romances #1 ($8.99): This is how you get me to read romance novels: put Harley Quinn on the cover. Also, all the covers for this one-shot parody cheesy romance novel covers in the absolute best way.
Quick Stops #4 ($3.99): I feel like this series is what Kevin Smith hoped the Clerks TV series would be, with the added bonus of some fourth wall humor and crossovers from the View Askew Universe. This issue is fun with a family reunion and some of Dante’s identical cousins – – with Jay and Silent Bob in charge of the Quick Stop. Which one has it worse?
Total: $12.98

Johnny’s Picks:
Briar #3 ($3.99): I’ve been absolutely loving this little gem of a mini-series, particularly the dynamic between artist German Garcia and colorist Matheus Lopes, who work in concert to give this dark fairy tale a very soft palette. If you’ve seen the pre-production art for Disney’s “The Sleeping Beauty,” particularly art director Eyvind Earle’s iconic ‘mid-century modern’ backgrounds, then you have a sense of the vibe the team on “Briar” are going for. Great stuff!
Demon Wars: Down In Flames #1 ($4.99): Marvel has handed over the keys to the kingdom to artist extraordinaire Peach Momoko, letting her iconic visuals dance with Asian folklore-inspired storytelling to rewrite the Marvel Universe in her image, and fans, myself included, are clamoring for more. There is a real delight seeing a talent at the height of their creative and commercial success, where every project they touch is a wonderful new expression of the dynamics that they alone bring to the art form, knocking project after project out of the park. All that preamble to say that Phoenix and Magik are two of my favorite Marvel characters, and I *really* dig Momoko’s interpretation of both – this is a fun little book! Keep swinging, Peach Momoko!
Total: $8.98 – well under the allowance! Go treat yourself to a coffee! Or a hamburger. You’ve earned it!
