Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Fall of the House of X #2 ($4.99): The Krakoan Age of books was chock full of some really surprising takes on the X-Fam, and while not every take has been to my liking, I have tons of admiration for the attempts made to reinvigorate and contemporize the themes at the core of the franchise. So far the denouement has been exciting, and with Polaris on the cover rocking daddy’s duds I don’t see the excitement ending anytime soon!

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #5 ($3.99): Rossmo’s art is so mischievous – cartoonish without being zany, nostalgic while feeling modern. I can’t say much more about this book other than I’d read a book where Rossmo drew the phonebook, which feels like a cheap shot at the STORY in this miniseries, but is really and truly just a fanboyish fawning for a favorite artist. Venditti and Rossmo are having fun here, and I’m happily along for the ride!

The Hunger and the Dusk #6 ($3.99): Another artist I can’t wait to see more from is Chris Wildgoose, whose work on this series from they and writer G. Willow Wilson, is absolutely stunning, a gorgeous animated style that compliments wonderfully expressive faces with immersive, lush backdrops that paint a vibrant fantasy world. I’m more than a little worried that with IDW backing away from their Originals line that this series will be cancelled, but this issue’s release is promising!

Sinister Sons #1 ($3.99): Not sure how I feel about this one, but LaFuente’s art looks fire. Hopefully it hits the all-ages tone it appears to be going for!

Total: $16.96 – If I had any more room to spare I’d definitely recommend folks check out Anders Nilsen’s “Tongues” issue 6, out from Fantagraphics this week – a mind-bending epic tale with some stunning and surreal artwork. It can be yours for $18!

Christopher’s Pick:

Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Three ($19.99): This is apparently the final season of this comic, as the toy line it tied into has ended, although it’s always possible Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Ty Templeton could reunite to continue telling DCAU Batman stories. Regardless, I’m happy to add another volume of new comics starring the version of the Dark Knight Kevin Conroy embodied first and foremost to my shelf: long may he continue to reign.

Total: $19.99

Kate’s Picks:

Displaced #1 ($4.99): Most of my curiosity around this one is because I was just to Toronto, Canada on a work trip so there was that moment of HEY I KNOW THAT PLACE I SAW IT ON HIGHWAY SIGNS BY THE AIRPORT. But there’s also some interesting philosophical questions at play here that could be explored in new ways in the comics medium.

The Cabinet #1 ($3.99): Okay this looks fun. Time travel, teens, and Cold War relics? It has the potential to be cloying and cutesy and a little too family friendly, but it also sounds like there’s a bit of an edge, which can get the darker elements of the story out.

Blue Book 1947 #1 ($4.99): Now I’m not saying it was aliens but . . . it was aliens. And if anyone knows how to make a horror story truly creepy with the concept of unknown to build tension, it’s James Tynion IV.

Total: $13.97
