Comics Should Be Cheap (2/15/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Picks:

Wasp #2 ($3.99): The first issue of Al Ewing and Kasia Nie’s miniseries was an excellent start to their revisit of Janet van Dyne’s origin story for her 60th anniversary, that reminded you just why she was the one who coined the name Avenger – looking forward to savoring more of it.

Monica Rambeau: Photon #3 ($3.99):Speaking of Ewings, Eve Ewing and Luca Maresca’s solo series for Monica has been a little weird, but in a good way, given it involves one of Marvel’s largest and most powerful villains (no spoilers, but he’s given himself a flamboyant makeover.) Onwards!

Total: $7.98

Johnny’s Picks:

Kaya #5 ($3.99): More people should be paying attention to this little gem of a book from cartoonist Wes Craig, of “Deadly Class” fame. This issue ends the first arc, so maybe not a great jumping on point, but I recommend it nonetheless. This is some really fun sci-fantasy!

Torrent #1 ($3.99): My other book this week is another Image book, but this one, as it is the first issue, is a GREAT jumping on point! “Torrent” reunites the creative team behind “Resurrection,” Marc Guggenheim and Justin Greenwood, and introduces a completely new superhero universe, all from the viewpoint of Crackerjack, a happy-go-lucky hero that turns vigilante in the face of tragedy. This feels like the next iteration of “Invincible,” a robust superhero world with lore that is revealed over time and plays with or inverts older superhero tropes – and Justin Greenwood’s art is splashy and dynamic. Really looking forward to seeing what this book is all about!

Total: $7.98

Kate’s Picks:

Shirtless Bear-Fighter Vol. 2 #7 ($3.99): It sucks that this is the end of this miniseries, but you know it is going to go out with a bang. Note: I would not follow the reading recommendation mentioned in the solicit if you are reading this in public.

Art Brut #3 ($3.99): Don’t let the Campbell’s Soup Can on the cover fool you, this is an Expressionist adventure with one very famous (and very often stolen) painting.

Marvel’s Voices Wakanda Forever ($5.99): Part Black History Month celebration, part loose and delayed Black Panther Wakanda Forever tie in (at least on the surface with the title), I wish that this wasn’t just focusing on Wakanda since there are so many wonderful Black stories and characters. But more representation in our comics, on any level, is a very good thing.

Total: $13.97
