Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:
The One Hand #3 ($3.99): While gripping in its own right, this title shares a universe with another Image miniseries, Dan Watters and Sumit Kumar’s “The Six Fingers,” and I can’t wait to read both titles *again* when the collected editions come out, as I’m sure I’ll pick up on all the fun Easter eggs and clues dropped by both teams throughout the noir stories. Fun books, both.
Kaya #17 ($3.99): Speaking of fun, I’ve long mentioned Wes Craig’s “Kaya” as a book filled with fun – and while the enjoyment of this adventure series isn’t the characters having a good time (in fact, the overall tone of the book could be considered quite dark as far as the protagonists are concerned), but in watching Wes Craig fill this vibrant sci-fantasy world with amazing landscapes, foliage, and fauna. The world-building here is so top-notch, not resting too long on any one thing, letting the reader’s mind extrapolate or build on what Craig only hints at.
Black Phoenix GN Vol. 3 ($14.95): Rich Tommaso’s work here with his “Black Phoenix” series has been fascinating. An entire hundred-plus page anthology book that *feels* like a product of another era. Newspaper print, full page fake ads (that sometimes feel very real), and pulpy tales that hop nimbly across genres. This book is a testament to Tomasso’s skill as a cartoonist, and a great read (the romance comics issue is my favorite so far!) to boot!
Total: $22.93 – A bit over, but well worth the extra coin.

Mark’s Picks:
Lightfall – Book 3: The Dark Times ($15.99): Tim Probert’s “Lightfall” series is perfect for middle grade readers that love “Bone” and “Amulet”. And no, this series is not going to look lesser by inviting the comparison to such giants. It really is that good. It’s one of those books that really feels like you’re stepping into another world. There’s a reason it’s top of my list this week.
Lackadaisy – Volume 1 ($25.00): I’m breaking the budget with this, I know, but I’ve long been a fan of Tracy Butler’s “Lackadaisy,” and now that it’s more widely available thanks to it getting a new publisher (Iron Circus Comics), I just wanted to remind you all it exists. I’ve spoken before about Bulter’s work, and time has only increased my fondness for it. Trust me, bootlegging cats make for great comics.
Total: $40.99. Sorry! (I’m also picking up “Kaya” #17, The One Hand #3, and “Love Everlasting” #14.)

Kate’s Pick:
Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story ($16.99): Dreamer was one of the more intriguing characters on Supergirl who just got introduced in the series too late for us to really give her a proper backstory on the show, so Dreamer’s portrayer on screen, Nicole Maines, jumps to graphic novels. Can I still put the idea for a Dreamer spinoff series into the universe?
Total: $16.99
