Comics Should Be Cheap (5/1/24)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Pick:

The Blood Brothers Mother #1 ($8.99): The magazine size for DSTLRY really fits the boutique nature of the small publisher, but adding these two iconic creators to their roster is anything but. Artist Eduardo Risso and writer Brian Azzarello’s team ups haven’t always been home runs, but they’ve always been intoxicatingly alluring. Typically dark, filled with treachery, ultra-violence, and morally ambivalent characters (capital “R” revenge often being at the heart of these stories), Azz and Rizz genuinely love playing in these turbulent waters, the draw of the darkness of noir or Western Gothic is one my own heart yearns for, and this book – a Western about a group of brothers in search for those that kidnapped their ma, is being uttered in the same breath as “Blood Meridian,” a Cormac McCarthy classic that is brutally dark yet keenly observant of human nature, particularly the animalistic, feral side. Even if the book ends up being not my cuppa, I’m sure Eduardo Risso will give me PLENTY of pretty pictures to look at.

Total: $8.99 – Kaya #18 comes out this week as well, so I’m sure that will get a pull, plus plenty – or as many as my shop will allow – of Free Comic Book Day books. Tons of great (and cheap!) reading to do this coming weekend, friends!

Christopher’s Picks:

Watch Dogs: Tokyo Vol. 1 ($14.99): Word on the street is that Ubisoft is done with Watch Dogs after the disaster that was Legion, which is such a shame if true, the second game showed how much fun the concept can be when executed well. All the more reason to check out Seiichi Shirato and Shuuhei Kamo’s manga, set in, well, the Japanese capital, and see how they explore the series’ themes in their country.

Free Comic Book Day: Absolute Power Special Edition ($0.00):This is my FCBD pick on Saturday, no questions asked: Mark Waid and Mikel Janin setting up the former’s summer crossover with Dan Mora? Sure, sorry, no offense to Transformers, Stranger Things, et al.

Total: $14.99

Kate’s Picks:

Bear Pirate Viking Queen #1 ($4.99): The solicit gives you zero clue as to what this series will be about, but if it delivers on the characters in the title, it can’t be bad . . . right?

Deadpool and Wolverine WWIII #1 ($4.99): Before Deadpool 3 drops in July, let’s have some comic fun with Marvel’s most mismatched pair of besties.

Toxic Summer #1 ($6.99): This would make one amazing teen summer horror movie straight out of 1988, though I do wonder with that price tag if it’s a supersized issue. If it’s your standard 24 page comic, the creative team better maximize that page count to its fullest.

Total: $16.97
