Comics Should Be Cheap (5/3/22)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Spider-Man 2099: Exodus Alpha #1 ($4.99): Jeeze that title is a mouthful, innit? Despite the run-on sentence that is the title, who else is stoked for one of the best looking superhero costumes of all time to liven up the comic stands once again?! The book, courtesy of writer Steve Orlando, artist Paul Fry, and colorist Neeraj Menon, brings us back to Nueva York, the flying city above the ruins of Marvel’s beloved New York City, and continues the adventures of Miguel O’hara, 2099’s very own Spider-Man! I really loved the inky saturation of this issue, and look forward to more stories with this team/character!

Twig #1 (of 5) ($3.99): The solicit describes the mini-series from writer Skottie Young and artist Kyle Strahm as “Bone-esque,” casually name-dropping one of the most iconic all-ages fantasy series of all time certainly piqued my curiosity, but Strahm’s visuals got me lovin this derpy little blue muppet lead character already. Count me in for this mini.

Total: $8.98 Pretty light week this week for me for regular comics (but some blisteringly good/expensive HC’s and trades out there). A great week to maybe drop another $5 on something outside my comfort zone!

Mark’s Pick:

The Stone King ($19.99): Kel McDonald and Tyler Crook’s “The Stone King” has been released before, serialized in late 2018 and early 2019 as a ComiXology Original. While it did technically get a print collection, it was available briefly and released so unceremoniously, you’d be very lucky if you managed to grab a copy. So for all intents and purposes, it’s been a digital-exclusive read for a few years now. Thankfully, ComiXology made a deal with Dark Horse to release print editions of many of their comics, so “The Stone King” is getting a second chance in print with this new edition. This is great news. While “The Stone King” was nominated for the Eisner for Best Digital Comic, I think print is the best way to read the story—Crook’s watercolor art just looks better in print.

Total: $19.99.

Christopher’s Picks:

Anne of West Philly ($12.99): I like that Little, Brown have decided to go all in on these modern takes on classic novels (namely “Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy” and “The Secret Garden on 81st Street”), and I like they’re continuing to do so with Anne of Green Gables. I like that Ivy Noelle Weir and Myisha Haynes’s take on the title heroine still has red hair, and I hope any child I pass this book to enjoys it too.

Quests Aside #1 ($4.99): I feel like Vault has been promoting Brian Schirmer and Elena Gogou’s tale of a tavern in a fantasy realm forever, so yes, I’m quite ready to finally go for some pub grub after two years away because of a plague — at least on paper.

Free Comic Book Day 2022: Avengers/X-Men: I am most certainly not missing the start of Kieron Gillen’s first crossover event, or the introduction of Blade’s daughter.

Total: $17.98

Kate’s Picks:

Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi #1 ($3.99): Time for Obi-Wan to reflect on a life well lived, just in time for a new Disney+ series to debut. It will be interesting to see how much of this series, if any, ties in with the upcoming Disney+ series, particularly as the flashbacks approach his adult years.

Twig #1 ($3.99): This looks so cute I just can’t pass it up. But knowing Skottie Young, there’s probably a little bit of edge into it. This one has some Shrek influences all over it.

Total: $7.98. A light week for me, but I’m also all over “Anne of West Philly” – – Anne of Green Gables was one of my favorite childhood books.

Brian’s Pick:

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi #1 ($3.99) – My favorite Star Wars character gets a miniseries that spans his early Jedi tales. Do I really think we need a Youngling Obi-Wan story? No, I do not. Will I lap it up like the sicko I am? Abso-lutely.

Total: $3.99 – a light week for the wallet, but with Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, it won’t be a light week of reading.
