Comics Should Be Cheap (5/3/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Blood of the Virgin ($30.00) Could it be this week that my “Favorite Book of 2023” arrives? With cartoonist and editor Sammy Harkham dropping his long awaited (14 years in the making!) graphic novel “Blood of the Virgin” – I sure have high hopes that this is the one! Set in Los Angeles in 1971, this graphic novel, like many, is a mix of a lot of things, but primarily functions as a grandiose epic narrative about movie-making, immigration, parenthood, sex, and how the myriad and cosmic entanglements of our lives build a person. Harkham’s “Kramer’s Ergot” and “Crickets” have been two of my favorite comic projects for a long time now, and this enormous (300+ pages!) graphic novel is a must for fans of Harkham and tour-de-force storytelling. Cannot wait to crack this open!

Total: $30.00 in one shot – but I’d be remiss if I didn’t also plug Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s first issue of Shazam, which is every bit as good as you can imagine. Mora don’t miss.

Kate’s Picks:

Starsigns #1 ($3.99): The stars and the zodiac continue to intrigue us throughout the years, and while this solicit doesn’t promise too much beyond an origin story, I’m intrigued to see what kinds of powers these 12 special people get.

Peacemaker Tries Hard #1 ($4.99): Anytime a superhero wants to do “normal” anything, you know that hilarity will ensue.

Groot #1 ($4.99): Much can be said about this series, but it really boils down to just this: I am Groot.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Lando #1 ($4.99): I expect a lot of high space adventure and a lot of high space capes.

Total: $18.96

Christopher’s Pick:

Superman: Space Age ($29.99): I still really enjoy Mark Russell’s melancholic but funny writing, and adore Mike and Laura Allred’s retro-inspired art, plus Superman is my favorite DC superhero, so all of them together should make for at the very least a spectacular read.

Total: $29.99 – worth it.
