Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Pick:

Briar Vol. 1 ($14.99): Christopher Cantwell and German Garcia’s BOOM! Studios series reimagines Sleeping Beauty, the original version of which is truly one of the most disturbing fairy tales. Their take sounds like a complete repudiation of the original, in which Briar Rose can truly forge her own destiny; count me in.

Total: $14.99

Johnny’s Picks:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen #3 ($4.99): Just a couple of books this week, and both featuring characters I’ve loved since I was a child. First up is the third issue in this newest team-up of a certain squad of ninjutsu practicing cryptodira, along with my favorite samurai rabbit. I’ve glowed about the first two issues of this delightful series, and continue to glow here about the third. Sure, the wheel is not being reinvented here by cartoonist maestro Stan Sakai, but his work is a wonderful distillation and perfection of 100+ years of anthropomorphized animal cartooning, from Disney, to Walt Kelly, to Carl Barks on down the line to these two groups of indelible characters in Eastman and Laird’s turtles and Sakai’s own Usagi.

Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures ($3.99): This book has been such a pleasant surprise – full nostalgia vibes for the rebirth of these 80’s cartoon characters, but really adding a nuanced depth to the characters that makes it appealing for folks wanting a more engaging read, but not too deep to alienate the all-ages audience the book is intended for. I think artist George Kambadais is such a fantastic fit for this project, who livens up the outdated character designs with some dynamism and wonderful expressions.

Total: $8.98

Kate’s Picks:

Kamen Rider Zero-One #4 ($3.99): The first of the Titan Manga original stories comes to a close, and as a first effort, it wasn’t half bad. It had enough of a hook to bring in folks new to the Kamen Rider universe, but enough Easter eggs to keep the longtime fans engaged. I hope we see more of this at Titan.

Daredevil and Echo #1 ($4.99): If you’ve heard about the Echo Disney+ show coming this fall and want to know a little bit more about the character, here’s a nice way to do it.

The Expanse Dragon Tooth #2 ($4.99): The beauty of The Expanse is how it starts off as a sci-fi story and unfolds into so much more (politics, even a bit of romance), bringing in people who may not normally be into sci-fi stories. This new comic continues that tradition.

Total: $13.97
