Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:
Shazam! #2 ($3.99): Issue one was a strong outing from Waid and Mora, perfectly encapsulating the childlike wonder and magical tone of the Shazam/Billy Batson character, and engaging readers with an undeniable charisma propelled by Mora’s outstanding visuals. So much joy and energy being poured into this series, I can’t help but read with a smile dashed across my face – even if the stakes are low and the silliness (like planet-hopping T-Rex aliens) is abundant. The Silver Age gets a modern day facelift courtesy of this very fun, and very gorgeous looking, series.
Total: $3.99

Kate’s Picks:
Fence Redemption #1 ($4.99): Your favorite queer fencers (and mine) are back, and I am ready for all the soap opera school drama that takes me back to the poorly acted and highly problematic by 2023 standards summer teen soaps that I would religiously watch in the 90s. (Anyone remember Swans Crossing? Just me?) But this? Much better on so many levels. It’s comics beach reading.
In Hell We Fight #1 ($3.99): Teens running amok in Lucifer’s playground. What could possibly go wrong? (A lot. A lot could go wrong. And that’s why we want to read this.)
New Talent Showcase: The Milestone Initiative #1 ($3.99): Not only does this appear to be a good way to get a peek at some of the rising stars of DC Comics (and perhaps comics in general), but a primer on some of the characters of the Milestone imprint. Two for one deal, and you can’t beat that!
Deadpool Badder Blood #1 ($4.99): Can Deadpool play nice with others? Can Rob Liefeld properly draw feet? There’s only one way to find out!
Total: $17.96
