Comics Should Be Cheap (6/21/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

The Bone Orchard Mythos: Tenement #1 ($3.99): The first of a ten-part miniseries, ‘Tenement’ is the biggest “Bone Orchard Mythos” story yet with promises to draw connections to ‘Shadow Eater,’ ‘The Passageway,’ and ‘Ten Thousand Black Feathers.’ Interestingly, ‘Tenement’ was originally meant to be the debut title for “The Bone Orchard Mythos,” but the idea didn’t quite come together as planned―it’s a story that kept growing beyond what Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino had planned, one that took on a life of its own. In this case, bigger is better since they both seem really happy with how it turned out. (Yeah, it’s already finished and Sorrentino is already forty pages deep into the next story, ‘Starseed,’ an OGN coming out in 2024.)

Cat’s Cradle – Volume 2: The Mole King’s Lair ($15.99): Jo Rioux first caught my attention with “The Daughters of Ys.” Her art and visual storytelling was fantastic. Then the “Cat’s Cradle” series came along, which she was not just doing the art on, but writing too. It’s an incredibly endearing story about an orphan girl that wants to learn how to track and tame monsters. I haven’t read this second one yet, but considering how much I enjoyed the first, I immediately pre-ordered this ‘The Mole King’s Lair.’ It’s perfect for a kid in the 9–12 age bracket that loves magic and animals.

Total: $19.98. It’s actually a pretty big week because I’ll also be picking up “Wild’s End” #1, “Kaya” #9, “Time Before Time” #24, and “Saga” #65.

Kate’s Picks:

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #1 ($3.99): I have this on my list solely for my other half, since it is his his two favorite things in the world: Godzilla and dragons.

Chilling Adventures Presents Camp Pickens #1 ($3.99): It isn’t summer without summer camp, and it isn’t summer camp without some good ol’ fashioned horror behind it (especially if you are an 80s child like me). With Tim Seeley, a writer who knows how to craft good slasher horror, those Riverdale kids better not go out for hanky panky at the lake after dark.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 #1 ($6.99): I can never say no to more Grogu stories.

Total: $14.97
