Comics Should Be Cheap (7/5/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Marvel Zero #1 ($6.99): Jonathan Hickman is back at Marvel. I repeat: Jonathan Hickman is back at Marvel, this is not a drill! Collecting all of the Free Comic Book Day issues in one convenient spot, this issue (at least for me) is highlighted by previews of two upcoming Hickman jams, “Gods” with Valerio Schiti and the REAL spicy meal – “Ultimate Invasion” with Bryan Hitch. I haven’t read the FCBD offerings, so I gotta believe we’re getting one of Hickman’s most underrated characters, Ultimate (and Ultimate Baddie) Reed Richards! 52 pages of full throttle talent and fun teasers for the near future of Marvel in one convenient package is a can’t miss.

Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland #1 ($3.99): I’m always interested when creators decide to play in the worlds of other creators, and I’m particularly jazzed that some great creators have lined up to play in Skottie Young’s Fairyland. This chaotic and irreverent fantasy series is home to a wonderful melange of…well, anything that tickles Young’s fancy that month, and so it should be excellent seeing cartoonists (like this month’s Aaron Conley and Dean Rankine) wreak their own brands of havoc with protagonist Gert. If you like violence, mayhem, and humor set in a silly, sideways Wonderland, you should give this mini a shot!

Weird Work #1 ($3.99): Good or bad, win, lose, or draw, I’ll never say no to a Shaky Kane book. Kane’s work is in the same sort of timeless-pop-kitsch vein of Mike Allred (Allred, in fact, does a variant cover to this issue), and his iconic pen has been wowing me since the 90’s, when Dark Horse was reprinting the influential British anthology series Kane was often a part of, “Deadline.” I never know what to expect when grabbing a Shaky Kane project, but I’m always drooling over the art.

Total: $14.97

Kate’s Picks:

Doctor Who Doom’s Day #1 ($3.99): This looks like Doctor Who meets 24 and if there was ever a comic story I would like to see adapted for TV, this would be it. (Time to bring back the multi-season story arcs!)

Swan Songs #1 ($3.99): W. Maxwell Prince has the gift of finding horror in the unexpected (which is really the backbone of what makes good horror), so I’m eager to see what he does with the topic of endings.

Captain America #750 ($7.99): Look, it’s July 4th. How can you not have the Star-Spangled Man on your pull list this week? And as folks may or may not know, I’m also a sucker for a milestone issue.

Total: $15.97
