Comics Should Be Cheap (8/2/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Sandman Universe Special: Thessaly #1 ($4.99): When I read the first volume of “The Sandman” last year for my Summer Comics Binge, Thessaly proved herself such a mysterious character, I wanted to learn more. Her name, after all, is the mythological homeland of such creatures as centaurs, and such heroes as Achilles and Jason. What mysteries does she hold? Now we may just have the chance to get answers to those questions – – or perhaps leave with even more.

Quest #1 ($3.99): I’ve loved Jonathan Luna’s art since “Alex and Ada,” and I can never say no to more high fantasy in my life.

Astonishing Iceman #1 ($3.99): My favorite Krakoan is back in his own series, which is wonderful, but what I’m really here for is that Miss Minutes variant cover. Because hey y’all, we know she’s the real star of Loki.

Conan the Barbarian #1 ($3.99): My knowledge of a Conan that isn’t an O’Brien starts and ends with Conan the Barbarian (and the musical parody that you need to see if you’ve ever seen the movie), but I found the Free Comic Book Day offering from Titan that sets up their new series interesting enough to take it just a little bit further.

Total: $16.96

Christopher’s Pick:

Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise Treasury Edition ($29.99): I’ve largely stopped buying Marvel trades in favor of Unlimited, but this oversized collection of Travis and Heather Moore’s gorgeously surreal miniseries is an exception, as it seems like a story made for reading across two-page spreads. Plus, it’s better for lending to a friend or donating to the library afterwards!

Total: $29.99 – worth it!
