Comics Should Be Cheap (8/23/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Xino #3 ($5.99): Another month, and another issue of this exemplary sci-fi anthology. This third, and looks to be final, issue features a story by one of my personal favorite cartoonists, Connor Willumsen, whose graphic novels “Bradley of Him” and “Anti-Gone” are two of the best of the past decade. This anthology has been chock full of great, inventive sci-fi, and they might have just saved the best for last.

Adventuregame Comics Vol 2: The Beyond ($14.99): Writer/artist Jason Shiga is such a fascinating creator- a cartoonist who loves to test the boundaries of what comics are capable of, and this graphic novel is no different. Via a myriad and relentlessly byzantine series of tubes throughout the comic, Shiga has created a book that is as much a comic as it is a choose-your-own-adventure – you’ll find yourself flipping backwards and forwards, determining your own path through the story. It’s this kind of ambitious storytelling and experimentation with the medium that keeps me coming back for more. If you want to witness some truly remarkable design and storytelling (not to mention Shiga is a brilliantly funny writer), check this out in your shop on Wednesday.

Total: $20.98 – a tad over, but worth the coin!

Kate’s Picks:

The Addams Family: The Bodies Issue #1 ($4.99): Wednesday Addams continues to have her moment, this time in a story from the animated Addams Family film with some fun and a lesson about self-acceptance at its heart.

Ice Cream Man #36 ($3.99): Looks to be a whale of a tale with this one. Pun intended.

Deadpool #10 ($3.99): Sandy and Danny weren’t the only one doing some summer lovin. But cooler nights and shorter days aren’t putting an end to Wade and Valentine. Just your run of the mill killer secret society.

Total: $12.97

Mark’s Picks:

Bone: More Tall Tales ($12.99): I’ve been anticipating this book for well over a year at this point. Written by Jeff Smith and Tom Sniegoski, and illustrated by Stan Sakai, Katie Cook, Matt Smith, and Scott Brown, this is a must-get book for me. I’m really hoping there will be stupid, stupid rat creatures.

Fire Power #26 ($3.99): My remaining pool of comics will be familiar to anyone that’s read my CSBC lists before, so with only enough left for one title, I opted for “Fire Power” #26 because Chris Samnee’s cover was just so damn great.

Total: $16.98. Plus my usuals, “The Bone Orchard Mythos: Tenement” #3, “Time Before Time” #26, the new “Lobster Johnson” omnibus, plus I’m curious about Jay Martin’s debut OGN “Lost Boy.”
