Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Up to No Ghoul ($12.99): Cullen Bunn and Cat Farris’s sequel to “The Ghoul Next Door.” My first introduction to Farris’s work was a series of shorts she did in the back of some of the “The Sixth Gun” spinoff miniseries, but she really won me over with “My Boyfriend Is a Bear.” Looking between these three projects, they’re all radically different in terms of tone, genre, and audience. But there is still something that unifies them; all her projects seem to have a character first approach, something writer Cullen Bunn leverages in “The Ghoul Next Door” to write horror for middle grade kids with a ghoul that is endearing without diminishing its ghoulishness. I’m looking forward to seeing where the pair of them take the sequel.

House of Slaughter #8 ($3.99): Admittedly, I’m quite late to James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s series. I just finished the first arc of “Something Is Killing the Children” and read the Free Comic Day issue “Enter the House of Slaughter,” but hopefully I’ll be able to catch up rapidly. Assuming it remains as good as those early issues, this is definitely a book I’ll pick up.

Total: $16.98

Johnny’s Picks:

Amazing Fantasy #1000 ($7.99): A slew of talented folks pay respects to our favorite web-slinger with this oversized landmark issue. I’ll just let the roster of talent speak for itself: Anthony Falcone, Dan Slott, Ho Che Anderson, Jonathan Hickman, Kurt Busiek, Michael Cho, Neil Gaiman, Rainbow Rowell, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Jim Cheung, Marco Checchetto, Olivier Coipel, Ryan Stegman, Steve McNiven, Terry Dodson, Todd Nauck, and more! At $7.99 this seems like a steal.

Knights of X #5 ($3.99): The Siege Perilous is the kind of X-catnip that I go crazy for, and the creative team is really determined to lean hard on fantasy elements to make this a terrific diversion from the normal X line of books. Super fun title!

X-Men #14 ($3.99): Speaking of fun, maybe my favorite relationship dynamic in all of the X books is General Cyclops and his number one lieutenant, Magik. Looks like they’ll be busting heads together this very issue, so I’m a lock.

Total:$15.97 – If you’re feeling like this is a “Treat Yo Self” type Wednesday, though, I can’t stress enough how great it is to see Astro City reprints back on the shelves. Metrobook Volume 2 hits the stands this week, and includes what just might be my favorite Kurt Busiek story ever – “The Tarnished Angel,” starring none other than Robert Mitchum (okay – a character that looks exactly like “The Friends of Eddie Coyle”-era Mitchum)! Lots of wonderful stuff in this oversized trade paperback – well worth the $35.

Kate’s Picks:

DC Saved by the Belle Reve #1 ($9.99): Kids in my home state of Connecticut are going back to school this week, so I’m in a school bus and school lunch and Trapper Keeper (remember those?) state of mind.

Firefly 20th anniversary Special ($7.99): It’s a show that was cancelled before its time, but perhaps that it was part of its charm. Happy two decades, Serenity. We’ll never take the sky from you.

Total:$17.98

Christopher’s Pick:

Batman ’89 ($24.99): I’m not actually the biggest fan of Tim Burton’s Batman films, but I think revisiting that world, especially after we were denied his version of Two-Face and Robin, not to mention the return of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, or Batgirl. Joe Quinones is an amazing artist and this book should be at least a feast for the eyes.

Total: $24.99 – worth it.
