Comics Should Be Cheap (9/27/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Monstress #48 ($3.99): Every book in my list this week is something I’m trade waiting on, so I don’t know anything about what’s going on in the latest arc. In this case, “Monstress – Volume 8: Inferno,” which collects #42–47 hasn’t come out yet, and no further titles have been solicited so I’ve no idea what #48 is. Is it the beginning of a new arc? If so, it’s very strange for it to come out now instead of next year. Anyway, that cover has me worried.

Fire Power #27 ($3.99): Even as a blind recommendation, this is the final arc of a series I’ve been really enjoying, so it had to be on my list.

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #4 ($4.99): I’m basically recommending this because lately I’ve enjoyed practically everything James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal have written, so the two of them working together is very appealing to me.

Black Hammer: The End #2 ($3.99): This series brings the latest phase of “Black Hammer” to an end and sets up what comes next in 2024. Honestly, though, the “what’s next” interests me more though. I’m just kind of burnt out on multiverse stories at the moment, especially when superheroes are involved. My hope is that it does something more interesting with it, like Everything Everywhere All at Once did. This is Lemire writing, so that’s a possibility, and looking at Malachi Ward’s cover here (my favourite of the six he’s done), it feels very much like the kind of storytelling I’d like to see this series veer into.

Total: $16.96

Kate’s Picks:

Sainted Love #1 ($4.99): It was our interview with Steve Orlando on this new series that sold me, but the solicit promises a little bit of time travel fun and a little bit of a history lesson. Best of all the multiple worlds.

Stuff of Nightmares Red Murder #1 ($7.99): It’s spooky season, so we have to have spooky books on the list. And this entry sounds straight out of the 1980s horror, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since this is penned by the king of 1980s young adult horror, R.L. Stine.

Total: $12.98
