Comics Should Be Cheap (10/25/23)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:

Amazons Attack #1 ($3.99): I know nothing about this series, other than that it’s helmed by talented writer Josie Campbell, whose work on “The New Champion of SHAZAM!” was an absolute delight. Paired with artist Vasco Georgiev and featuring some fan favorite Amazonians like Queen Nubia and Yara Flor (Wonder Girl!), this book will likely sate my irregular appetite for Wonder Woman stories.

Rare Flavours #2 ($4.99): Call the Pun Police, because I thought that issue one of this series about Indian cuisine and the demons who love it from Ram V and Filipe Andrade was absolutely delicious! Andrade’s fun art punctuated Ram V’s charming tale (and even more charming main characters – a charismatic rakshasa and a down-on-his-luck filmmaker), and only one issue in I’m already bummed this is just a six issue miniseries. V and Andrade work so well together, each book with them at the helm is a delight.

Total: $8.98

Kate’s Picks:

Ice Cream Man #37 ($3.99): Free the Figglybumps! Nothing like cute and cuddly horror the week before Halloween, and I’m always happy to see this series back.

Universal Monsters Dracula #1 ($4.99): Comics hottest horror writer tackling the Universal horror catalog is a great way to bring these classic monsters to a new generation.

Giant Robot Hellboy #1 ($3.99): Just when you think Hellboy’s done it all . . . meet Mecha-Hellboy! It’s always fun to see how this universe expands in different ways, and this is one of those times.

Captain Marvel #1 ($4.99): Carol Danvers is back and that’s really all that matters.

Total: $17.96

Mark’s Picks:

The Lonesome Hunters: The Wolf Child #4 ($3.99): This issue is without a doubt up there with Tyler Crook’s best work. I don’t want to say more than that and get in the way of anyone’s experience of it, but I’ll certainly have a lot to say about it elsewhere.

Giant Robot Hellboy #1 ($3.99): Duncan Fegredo drawing “Hellboy,” Mike Mignola writing “Hellboy,” a story about a Giant Robot Hellboy. Any one of these three things alone would make this a must-buy comic. Together they make this absolutely unmissable. I’m particularly interested to see how this story plays out, because it was a concept Mignola originally rejected, then the pandemic happened and he drew those famous Giant Robot Hellboy drawings to raise money for the World Central Kitchen, and somewhere in there the idea got its hooks into him and demanded to be told. Which means it also demands I read it.

Gone #1 ($8.99): I really enjoyed Jock’s work on “Snow Angels” with Jeff Lemire, and I’m eager to see him do more science fiction, but there’s also a part of me that’s picking this up just out of pure curiosity. DSTLRY has decided to print its comics at magazine size (the same as DC’s Black Label and very close to standard bande dessinée size) and with significantly more story pages than a standard US single issue. It’s just a bigger format in all aspects and I’m genuinely curious to see what Jock does with the space. Especially with the wider page ratio, I’m expecting something that feels more cinematic, which is a good match for the kind of science fiction I like most. This takes out a significant chunk of my $20 this week, but I couldn’t pass on this one.

Total: $16.97. I’ll also be picking up the “Black Hammer – Volume 3” library edition, which collects the twelve-issue ‘Reborn’ arc.
