Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Johnny’s Picks:
G.O.D.S. #2 ($4.99): The first issue was good, if perplexing. I’m a sucker for Hickman, and Schiti has never looked better, so I’m still along for this arabesque tale of rewritten interconnectivity of the Marvel Cosmology! Whatever that may mean!
Star Wars: The High Republic #1 ($5.99): I really thought Cavan Scott’s work across the spectrum of High Republic projects has been pretty great, so I’m happy to see him kick off Phase III of this era of Star Wars.
Santos Sisters Halloween Special ($5.00):: I think a printer error caused the book to be delayed by a week, but don’t let that stop you from keeping the Halloween party going! This giant-sized book features several spooky guest appearances by other famous indie comic characters, as well as reprinted back up stories, all in Greg and Fake Petre’s wonderfully nostalgic Archie-comic style art. Printed on newsprint paper, this book is always a joy to flip through.
Petrol Head #1 ($4.99): My most anticipated release this week is 2000 A.D. veterans Rob Williams and Pye Parr’s riotous robot carnage book “Petrol Head,” immediately immerses you in the robo-punk setting. This book looks like a lot of fun.
Total: $20.97 – Just a shade over the limit, but I hope you’ll forgive me once you’ve given these awesome comics a chance!

Mark’s Picks:
Petrol Head #1 ($4.99): A slightly more expensive issue, yes, but it’s double-length. I spoke to Rob Williams and Pye Parr last month about their plans for this new series and I must say, I’m really looking forward to it. The first arc will run for five issues, but they’ve got much more in the tank. The AIPT Comics podcast has a great chat with the two of them as well, and it’s fascinating to hear Parr talking about how he approaches body language and character silhouettes. I definitely recommend giving it a listen.
Panya: The Mummy’s Curse #4 ($3.99): So, I actually waited to read this series all in one go and I really enjoyed it. That said, I’d only recommend this to readers that are already immersed in the mythology of the Hellboy Universe. It’s definitely not for new readers. That said, it’s just gorgeous to look at. Christopher Mitten and Michelle Madsen work fantastically together.
Phantom Road #6 ($3.99): Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta’s long haul epic returns for its second arc.
House of Slaughter #19 ($3.99): I’m so far behind on this series at the moment. When this arc is finished with issue #20, I need to catch up.
Total: $16.96.

Kate’s Picks:
Doctor Who Once Upon a Time Lord ($17.99): Been waiting a long time for this one. While I love the current creative team on Titan’s Doctor Who series (Jody Houser and Roberta Ingranata) I’m eager to see someone else take on a TARDIS story.
Petrol Head #1 ($4.99): We’re all picking this one this week, aren’t we? The Cars meets Mad Max meets WALL-E story is perfect for all ages, and the colors on this look gorgeous. Never has the post-apocalypse looked so good. Also, check out Laurence Campbell’s variant cover, which has Edward Hopper “Nighthawks” vibes.
Total: $22.98 – over budget, but David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor makes it worth it.
