Comics Should Be Cheap (3/31/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Two Moons #2 ($3.99): If you’ve been missing John Arcudi’s run on “B.P.R.D.,” then definitely pick this up. It’s Arcudi doing the supernatural and playing it straight. Valerio Giangiordano’s artwork is fantastic too.

Decorum #7 ($3.99): If you were an artist, but didn’t particularly dig comics, I’d still recommend this one to you. Mike Huddleston shows so much versatility in this comic, it’s worth picking up just to study. Also, you know, if you like comics, it helps that this is also a great comic.

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #2 ($3.99): – The first issue threw a lot at the reader, and this one does too, but it grounds it much more. Even still, there’s a fight with a T-Rex!

Brindille – Volume 1 #2 ($2.99): OK, I’ve got to admit, I don’t know anything about this one. I just saw Frédéric Brrémaud’s art on ComiXology and I was curious. Besides, it’s not going to take me over budget.

Total: $14.99.

Christopher’s Picks:

Silk #1 ($3.99): She’s back! This has been delayed for a very long time by COVID-19 and I’m glad it still transpired — it’s always good to see a new writer (Maurene Goo) at Marvel, and Takeshi Miyazawa is such an expressive, joyful, and underrated artist, so hopefully this’ll lead to another ongoing.

Shang-Chi Vol. 1: Brothers and Sisters ($15.99): Speaking of Asian rep, did you think I wouldn’t pick up what is now the first volume of Gene Luen Yang and Dike Ruan’s expansive reinvention of the Master of Kung Fu? Buy separate copies for everyone in your bubble; then for all your local schools and libraries; and then anyone with a birthday coming up, and a spare few for anyone you’re gonna be a secret Santa to — no, Sister Dagger is not making me write this!

Total: $19.98

Kate’s Pick:

Fat ($17.50): One pick this week, but it’s a powerful one. Art can speak for us in those issues and moments where our own words may falter. If Regina Hofer’s memoir of her eating disorder and mental health issues can help one other person suffering in silence, then it will have succeeded.

Total: $17.50.
