There are three for-sure things all people love in life: comic covers, cover bands, and MS Paint. Some warned us to never combine this holy trinity. We here at Multiveristy Comics said no, threw caution to the wind, and combined mankind’s three favorite things into our new weekly feature: MS Masterpaint Theatre! Each week, we will highlight some of the best comic cover art by recreating those masterpieces in the artist’s ultimate tool, MS Paint.
Welcome to this week of MS Master Paint Theatre. Before we enjoy this week’s masterpieces, let’s run over the rules again real quick.
Rules:
- Must use MS Paint.
- Must use mouse and keyboard.
- No tips, tricks, or hints.
- 1 hour per piece.
- Each piece will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.
Simple enough! Let’s open the curtain on this week’s covers! Enjoy

‘Namwolf #2
By Mike Mignola

Alright, I’m doing a Mignola cover. I was hesitant cause he is a god; there are very few people in comics I hold in higher regard than Mike Mignola. I think Morrison, Mignola and Kirby are the be all, end all when it comes to the lens I view comics through. Anyway, I decided it was time. One reason because I fucking love “Namwolf.” Fabian Rangel Jr. and Logan Faerber’s comic about a werewolf in Vietnam is so much fun. Secondly, its a dope cover – but of course it is. Lastly, I also have been reading the “DC Universe By Mike Mignola” hardcover that just came out. So, it all culminates in my wanting to try this cover. I am not even going to sully the name of Mignola by telling you why this cover is fantastic. It’s obvious. Anyway lets see how I ruined of the all time comic greats cover.
‘Namwolf #2
By Kyle Welch after Mike Mignola

Maybe it was fear, or maybe I was so inspired by a great that this did not come out half bad. I mean, its bad – but not half bad. It helped that paint has a line tool so I could create the sharp edges of Mignola’s style. My werewolf looks like he snacked on a few more Nazi soldiers; he’s got that chubby chin. I am also pretty good at drawing “v” shaped birds in Paint, so I will probably be focusing exclusively on covers that feature those in the future.
As you can see the font was tough. There are not a whole bunch of brush options in paint or font options. So clearly I just decided to go for the poop smear font option.
7.986 birds that looks like a v out of 10 birds that look like a v.
Thank you for checking out another installment of MS Masterpaint Theatre. Look for more stunning recreations soon. As we have settled into agroove I will look to get other Multiversity Staff into contributing and maybe even possible creator guests! If you are a reader and would like to contribute, we would love your submissions for your MS Paint masterpieces. Send them here: kwelch@multiversitycomics.com. Until next week, may your airbrush always be crappy.
