Another month, another stacked set of releases from DC. Things we didn’t have time to talk about: a new He-Man miniseries, a “White Knight” spinoff, “gen:LOCK” #1, another new ‘Hill House’ title, acetate covers, and a “Crisis on Infinite Earths” giant with new pages?

10. Ya stalking me, DC?

A few weeks ago, I read the entirety of the ‘War of the Gods’ crossover for the Chronicles of Shazam, and I really enjoyed both the scope and the ambition of the project. Well, fast forward to the November solicitations, and DC is collecting the entire run – including the tie-ins not yet on DC Universe – next year. If y’all haven’t read this, this is a good time to pick it up. It’s a really fun Wonder Woman story, and also a really interesting look at the DC Universe in 1991.

WONDER WOMAN: THE WAR OF THE GODS OMNIBUS HC
written by GEORGE PEREZ and others
art by GEORGE PEREZ and others

When Zeus and the gods of Olympus go to war with other deities from across the heavens, the heroes of the DC Universe are stuck in the middle. Teaming with Superman and others, Wonder Woman must discover who is pulling the strings behind the scenes! This new hardcover collects the entire “War of the Gods” event, including War of the Gods #1-4 and Wonder Woman #58-62, Superman: Man of Steel #58, Hawkworld #15 and #16, Starman #38, L.e.g.i.o.n. ’91 #31, Hawk and Dove #28, Captain Atom #56 and #57, Doctor Fate #32 and #33, Flash #55, Justice League Europe #31, Batman #470, Suicide Squad #58, The Demon #17, and The New Teen Titans #81.

9. In need of immunization

The ‘Year of the Villain’ event has been a lot more enjoyable than some (read: me) expected it to be. In part, that is because it hasn’t been as grimdark as the story’s title may appear to be. That said, there are a few “Infected” stories hitting this month, and I sincerely hope that they don’t get too caught up in the gritty elements that can drag these stories down.

Just don’t hurt my beautiful Billy boy.

Oh, and Sina Grace and Dennis Hopeless are writing the “King Shazam” and “Scarab” one-shots. Both of them are great; congrats dudes!

THE INFECTED: KING SHAZAM! #1
written by SINA GRACE
art by JOE BENNETT
cover by DAVID MARQUEZ

Billy Batson is a good kid. He helps his friends, loves his family, and tries to do the right thing. But Billy is about to have a run-in with the most dangerous serial killer in existence, and the Batman Who Laughs wants Billy to be bad. Spinning out of the events of Batman/Superman and “Year of the Villain,” it’s the tale of a hero whose soul has been turned black, and who has something to prove to the old guard. Buckle in for Shazam’s journey to punch a bunch of so-called “gods” in the face and show the establishment exactly what the future looks like…

8. Naomi, come on down!

After some teases, we are finally seeing Naomi joining the Young Justice crew. This makes sense, both because of her age and her Bendis connection (he, ya know, co-create her). Plus, look at Tim Drake’s new, weird costume. What’s up with that?

Welcome, Naomi! Wonder Comics’ brightest shining star comes to Young Justice! She’s ready to join this team of young heroes who have seen it all—and you’ll want to be here to watch the sparks fly for the very first time. All this, plus the true story of Jinny Hex.

7. The Last Last

Continued below

If their words are to believed, this is the final issue of the ‘final’ Batman story by the New 52 creative team. They are going to be doing more stories together, but this appears to be both the last solo Bat-story, as well as the ‘final’ story for this version of Bruce Wayne.

“Last Knight on Earth” has been a fun, weird future story, and I’m legitimately excited to see how it wraps up.

BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH #3

Gotham City has been remade. Omega reigns supreme. Can Batman finally accomplish what no other hero has and free the world from his dark reflection’s shadow? Or is it too late for the recreated Caped Crusader?

6. Who asks the Question?

After a few years in the wilderness, the Question is so hot right now, appearing in “Action Comics,” “Event Leviathan,” and “Lois Lane.” Here, we get a solo story by the all-star team of Jeff Lemire, Denys Cowan, and Bill Sienkiewicz for Vic Sage, the ‘original’ Question. This is an oversized, four part, bimonthly book, and for the creators alone, I’m in for this. Add in an oft-neglected character? I’m super jazzed.

THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE #1
written by JEFF LEMIRE
art and cover by DENYS COWAN and BILL SIENKIEWICZ
variant cover by JEFF LEMIRE

For years, Vic Sage has worn the faceless mask of the Question to clean up the streets of Hub City by sheer force of will. He knows right from wrong. He knows black from white. But what happens when he is drawn into a conspiracy that reaches from the heights of Hub City power to the depths of its underground tunnels? What happens when things stop being black-and-white and start getting a little gray? And what happens when, in a secret chamber deep beneath the city, Vic Sage meets his own end…and his new beginning? Eisner-winning writer Jeff Lemire joins forces with the legendary art team of Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz to resurrect Vic Sage, only to destroy him all over again…and again…

5. Steve Orlando returns to Themyscira

Steve Orlando has been hanging out in the “Wonder Woman” world on and off for about a year now, but this month begins a six-issue storyline from Orlando that sees Cheetah return to the fold as, wait for it, the ruler of Themyscira. More than almost anyone else at DC right now, Orlando is a master at introducing small plot threads, only to tug on them months or years later. I’m very excited to see what he does with this next arc.

WONDER WOMAN #82
written by STEVE ORLANDO
art by JESUS MERINO
acetate cover by RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE
variant cover by JENNY FRISON

Now that Cheetah has gained control of Themyscira, Wonder Woman must return home for a final showdown. Does she stand a chance against this scholar-turned-monster whose sole purpose was to enter this mythical realm? Meanwhile, Earth is left unprotected and some of Themyscira’s most vile creations have found their way there. What chaos awaits Wonder Woman if she ever returns? Join returning writer Steve Orlando for the first chapter of this six-issue tale!

4. Guess who’s back?

DC has been trying to make Constantine in the main universe work since the New 52, with varying degrees of success. With the exception of his initial appearances in the New 52 “Justice League Dark” and the “Constantine: The Hellblazer” series from DC You, the character has been a bit of a shadow of his former self.

Continued below

Well, this series focuses on an older Constantine, one not beholden to his main-DCU continuity, and will, hopefully, help return the character to his “Hellblazer” roots, with all that comes along with it.

JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER #1

John Constantine is back in London, back to his old tricks—and just in time, as things have become very dark indeed in his old stomping grounds. A small-time gang lord has found himself dealing with a big-time outbreak of supernatural weirdness…and without any allies to call on and nothing left to call his own, John doesn’t have much choice about taking a paycheck from one of London’s worst, or accepting the help of one of the gang lord’s would-be foot soldiers. But what should be an open-and-shut exorcism turns out to be nothing but…and the author of this madness may just be getting started on their terrible masterpiece!
The original Constantine is back in this series from Si Spurrier (The Dreaming) and Aaron Campbell (Infidel), with nothing to his name but decades of bad memories and an unearned second chance. How, exactly, will he squander it? There’s only one way to find out…

3. Long Live the Legion!

Y’all know this was going to be high on the list. It has been a minute since the last “Legion of Super-Heroes” series, and nearly a generation since as clean a jumping on point as this one – seriously, the last “Legion” series, despite starting the New 52, was one of the few books that acknowledged the continuity weirdness. Plus, Ryan Sook on interiors! We know this won’t last, but let’s enjoy it while it does!

2. In the villa of Ormen

An interlude between the first and second books of “The Green Lantern,” this miniseries sees the Green Lantern Corps wiped out of existence, and follows Hal Jordan as a Blackstar, as well as some classic Lantern characters: Mongul and the denizens of Ysmault. Written by the GOAT Grant Morrison, and illustrated by recent “Wonder Woman” standout Xermanico, this miniseries is one of the most anticipated titles not just of the month, but of the year.

What has Hal Jordan done? Following the catastrophic events of The Green Lantern #12, no Green Lanterns can be found patrolling their space sectors…and not a single power ring lights the darkness. Across the universe, once-familiar faces now wear a different uniform and enforce a new type of galactic law. The Green Lantern Corps is dead—long live the Blackstars! Who are they? What are they? Answers will be revealed as the unstoppable Blackstars set their sights on the demons of Ysmault, Mongul…and a tiny, backwater planet called Earth. A dangerous new chapter of the Green Lantern mythology starts now!

1. Hot damn this looks dope

In keeping with the lantern theme, this is one of the most fun sounding new series in a long time. “Far Sector” is part Lantern book, part Young Animal title, part dope creative team, this book was announced earlier this year, and I’ve been scouring the solicits each month to see when it would be dropping. Featuring Jamal Campbell (“Naomi,” “Nightwing”) on interiors and variant covers by Shawn Martinorugh and Jamie McKelvie (!), the book is certain to be one of the prettiest books DC releases this year.

But even more exciting is the fact that novelist N.K. Jemisin is making her comics debut on this cosmic series. This book has everything going for it. You won’t regret picking this up.

FAR SECTOR #1
written by N.K. JEMISIN
art and cover by JAMAL CAMPBELL
variant cover by SHAWN MARTINBROUGH
variant cover by JAMIE McKELVIE

N.K. Jemisin, the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Broken Earth and Inheritance science fiction trilogies, makes her comic book debut with bestselling Naomi artist Jamal Campbell as they thrust you into a stunning sci-fi murder mystery on the other side of the universe!
For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent.
But that’s all about to change in this new maxiseries that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!
