Another month, another set of solicits!

As this month is winding down, we’ve just now been seeing the majority of solicitations from publishers (all except Marvel whom, at the time I am writing this, have not released a full set yet). With that in mind, we will start as we always do with our favorite home of Mignola, Buffy and more with Dark Horse’s June 2012 solicitations.

Check out some thoughts on upcoming books behind the cut, and take a look at the full solicits here.

The Return of Baltimore

While Mike Mignola’s shared universe of characters and stories is one of the major highlights of any given month, his other book “Baltimore” that follows the same ongoing rules. With two successful minis adapting the Baltimore novel by Mignola and Christopher Golden, June brings about the latest mini in the series with the two-issue ‘Dr. Leskovar’s Remedy’, once again co-written by Mignola and Golden with art by Ben Stenbeck and colors by Dave Stewart. More Mignola is always a good thing.

Oh, and speaking off…

Cameron Stewart’s BPRD Series Debuting In June

June brings with it two BPRD books. The first is the second issue of ‘the Devil’s Engine’ by Mignola, Arcudi, Crook and Stewart — the “main” BPRD team. For those looking for the central continuation of the BPRD storyline that is taking a “break” (sort of) to tell a ton of stories in the BPRD world, this is one of the two big ones (with the other being the currently publishing ‘the Long Death’.)

The second is ‘Exorcism,” the highly anticipated mini-series written and illustrated by Cameron Stewart with Mignola input and Stewart colors, starring Ashley Strode and Ota Benga. Given all the teases Stewart has put up on his tumblr, let alone the work he has already done in the comic medium, this is certain to be an excellent diversion along BPRD’s already terrific path.

Buffy-mania

Not only does June bring the first collection of Season 9 of “Buffy”, not only do we get new issues of both “Angel & Faith” and “Buffy,” but Juliet Landau (the actress who played Drusilla most famously in Season 2 of the show) is writing a spin-off mini-series starring her character, illustrated by Cliff Richards and Tim Seeley.

Drusilla, following the events of Season 2, had gone on the run and disappeared after the finale, ultimately leaving Spike due to his affection for the slayer. While she only returns once on the show, Drusilla did have a role in the expanded comic universe, appearing in the “Angel” series from IDW, with Landau herself co-writing two issues.

Now that Dru has returned in a new light in the pages of “Angel & Faith”, it looks like much more is being done with the character, and with Dru herself involved, it should certainly be an interesting series to follow for anyone who has been following “Buffy” in the comic world.

Dark Horse Presents Gets Even Better

I don’t think I can ever really praise “Dark Horse Presents” enough, but I feel like I must. I don’t think enough people realize how many great comics are contained within this single anthology, and it pains me to see people missing out on that. With “DHP” #13, we get a “Ghost” reboot from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Noto, something that will hopefully translate into a new ongoing, as well as pieces from John Layman (writing “Aliens”!), John Arcudi, Carla Speed McNeil, Steve Niles, Sam Keith, Steve Rude, Geoff Darrow and more.

If you like comics, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be picking this up. No reason whatsoever.

The Massive Begins

A new ongoing that serves as a thematic follow-up to “DMZ” by Brian Wood, Kristian Donaldson and Dave Stewart:

In a post-war, post-crash, post-disaster, post-everything world, the environmental-action trawler Kapital scours the earth’s oceans for its mysteriously missing sister ship, The Massive. Captain Callum Israel, a man who has dedicated his life to the ocean, now must ask himself–as our planet dies–what it means to be an environmentalist after the world’s ended. Callum and his crew will come up against pirates, rebels, murderers, and thieves as they struggle to remain noble toward their cause. Can you save a planet that’s already doomed?

What more do you need than that?

Please Check Out “Resident Alien”

I’ve written a fair deal about “Resident Alien” on this site before, so I won’t bother repeating myself. You get it — I like this comic.

I will, however, use this as another opportunity to implore you to check it out, as you should.

So, please, check it out. Not for me. For you.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
