Wrapping up our week-long look at solicits, it’s finally come time to turn our discerning tastes towards Marvel Comics. What makes the pick? What doesn’t? Never mind what doesn’t, it only matters what does!
For the full solicitations from Marvel Comics, head on over to CBR.

10. Peter Parker is Back, but Not Really
Contained within a series of misleading solicits, Peter Parker as Spider-Man will be published in comics again in the tail end of 2013. He’s not coming back in the real story (yet), but an impressive line-up of writers and artists such as Joe Casey, Jen Van Meter, Emma Rios, Brian Reed, Klaus Janson and more will be lending their talents to tell lost Peter Parker stories in order to celebrate something — probably that there have been no new Peter Parker stories in a while.
So, don’t be confused reading the solicits, but don’t be shy about checking these issues out either. Should be fun.

9. The Return of the Ellis
We discussed this in a news post, but I figured it was worth re-mentioning that Warren Ellis was coming back to monthly comics and teaming up with Kelly Sue DeConnick to do so. Can I get an aw yeah? Aw yeah.

8. Kot Comes to Marvel
Again, something we discussed in an individual newspost, but it is worth repeating: Ales Kot has come to Marvel to tell stories with the spy team “Secret Avengers.” It stands as notable because he did such an excellent job on DC’s clandestine team, and they took him off after three issues because they’re nuts. I have high hopes.

7. Origin II Debuts
I’m iffy on Origin II. Honestly. I am.
On the one hand, I’m a big fan of Kieron Gillen and Adam Kubert. I think that together they will tell a rather entertaining story, and I think that Kieron is a strong enough writer to write to Kubert’s strengths in the way that Jason Aaron has in the past when the two have collaborated on Wolverine stories.
On the other hand, I’m a touch not convinced it is a book I need to read. It is a book I am curious about, and certainly want to read, but is this a story that really needed telling? And if so, why now, other than to capture the buzz Wolverine is getting from various other things like a successful blockbuster movie?
“Origin II” clearly exists because Marvel thinks it will be a worthwhile sense of income. I am hoping that Gillen and Kubert turn that into something that has as lasting an effect and is as impressive a read as the first “Origin” was. We’ll see.

5. The End of a Young Avengers Era?
I’ve seen some speculation on this, no confirmation for probably all the obvious reasons, but it looks like this part of “Young Avengers” is coming to a close. Whether it means that Kieron and Jamie’s run is done or some other thing, the solicit for issues #13 and #14 do make it very much seem like an ending of sorts is upon us. I do not believe that the title would be cancelled; far from it, as it seems to do rather well. But with “Phonogram 3” long pending, perhaps a “Phonogram” esque story to appear around the New Year is the indicator that a shift is upon us?
Continued belowI’d hope not. Kieron and Jamie have knocked it out of the park with their book. I’d hate to see them stop the party. The party should last forever.

ISSUE #14 – RESOLUTION (1 of 2)
• We gather in a night club, and have a string of connected and overlapping stories starring our cast. It’s a completely and unprecedented approach to a story in comics history. There are no parallels. We refuse to accept it.
•Team Young Avengers are joined by an all-start cast of some people we really like. Each individual section gets one individual artist. It’s a metaphor, probably.
• It’s been one hell of a year. In two episodes, one before and one after the new year, the Young Avengers get resolution. You guys do as well.

4. Kitty Pryde Defects?
It’s one of the more strange solicits given out this month, but for all intents and purposes it looks like Kitty Pryde is joining the “Uncanny X-Men” after the events of the current crossover. It would seem unlikely; I think they want you to think Kitty is joining the team when really she’s more likely to a) be a liaison between the two groups and/or b) just want to enjoy a fun girls night out. If Kitty Pryde does defect, I would have no complaints, but this seems a bit suspicious to me.
More to the point, Kris Anka is illustrating the issue! I love Kris Anka’s work! Double win.

3. That Time Miles Morales Ended Up In The Marvel Universe

But, that leaves one thing unresolved:

2. Who’s That Spider?
Ok, so, we guessed that Spider-Hero on the Mighty Avengers was originally Miles. That was an incorrect guess. But now that we’ve met Spider-Hero, one has to ask, who is he?
Well, based on his appearance in the issue and based on the choice of colors he has in costumes, my guess is him:

It’d explain the lurking in the shadows bit, right? We’ll see if it pans out for me this time. PLACE YOUR BETS, PEOPLE!

1. Oh, the Inhumanity!
Hot off the heels of “Infinity,” “Inhumanity” is going to kick into gear with a one-shot by Fraction and art by Olivier Coipel. Personally? I love the Inhumans. One of the most interesting sides of the Marvel Universe. I liked that they were left unused, because whenever they showed up it means that the story they were included in must really mean something. Making everyone Inhuman… I’m iffy on it.
But you know what I’m not iffy on? Olivier Coipel art.
I’m willing to give this a shot. Fraction seems like he has interesting ideas, and it’ll be nice for the Inhumans to get a bit of a spotlight. We’ll see if it pans out.
