Hey! It’s The Best of May! The best May Parker stories ever!
Just kidding! It’s that time of month to talk about the best and worst of the month. This month the responsibility to choose which titles fit the bill for those two categories falls on me. So without further hesitation or foreplay, let’s get to the action shall we?
Hit the jump to see the selections.
Shit…Really?! Scene of the Month: The Neo are back! The Neo are dead… (X-Men Giant Sized #1)
I was excited for the return of the Neo as I am one of the few fans that really enjoyed the Claremont return in 2000 that introduced these characters. Then as quickly as they had returned they were also dead. Why can’t the characters I enjoy get some love?
Best Book of the Month: Sweet Tooth #21
This book is so good it’s illegal in ten states and a couple countries. Jeff Lemire is 21 issues into this title and there has yet to be a month where he has rested on his laurels. Every month he experiments a bit or a lot, and continuously provides readers their moneys worth. This month’s offering was no different. If you aren’t checking this book out you are doing yourself a serious disservice.
Worst Book of the Month: Generation Hope #7
This book was awful in my opinion. The art was bad and the writing was not what I’d expect from a talent the likes of Kieron Gillen. It honestly could be that this book just isn’t my cup of tea, but whatever it is this was my least favorite book of the month.
Runner Up: Alpha Flight #0.1
Best Scene of the Month: Noh Var and Red Hulk share eggs (Avengers #13)
Worst Scene of the Month: The Immoral Kitty Pryde (Generation Hope #7)
This scene was terrible. It was so over the top. It almost felt like a scene from the Teen Titans cartoon that ran for awhile. (Do I even need to state that I did not enjoy that cartoon at all?) This was by far the worst scene of the book. As this was my least favorite book of the month it only made sense that it be my selection for worst of the month.
Best Writer of the Month: Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Strange Adventures, Superboy)
The Jeff Lemire love fest continues here. I love this book. Let me say it one more time. I love this book. Lemire has given us an engaging story containing believable and relatable characters. He then puts these characters in terrible situations and I love it. It is a book I look forward to every month because it tends to end on a cliffhanger and rarely does it pick up the next issue with a let down. Add to this Lemire’s work on Superboy and his Ultra The Mulit-Alien story in Strange Adventures and you have a great month for a great writer.
Worst Writer of the Month: …
No one really stands out for me in this one so I’m choosing to not select one!
Best Artist of the Month: Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Strange Adventures)
His work on Sweet Tooth every month has new twists and turns. He experiments and he provides things you can’t get in other books. His ability to tell a story with not only his written word but also his narration-less art is amazing. I truly feel that he is the best writer/artist combo in the industry at this time. Did anyone else see his Ultra story this month? I know I did, and it was the highlight of the anthology which contained it (Strange Adventures).
Continued belowWorst Artist of the Month: Juan Bobillo (Astonishing X-Men #38)
I just didn’t dig the art in this issue at all. The Beast was terrible. I mean terrible. I have attached a picture to prove my point.
Most Underrated Book of the Month: Li’l Depressed Boy # 4
I love this title. It is filled with so much heart and awe. Then this issue hit and it broke my heart, but in the best of ways. I love this book and I really wish I heard more about it from other sites. This title needs more coverage. The book is just too good to not be a big deal when it hits. Much like Sweet Tooth this is a title I can’t do without.
Most Overrated Book of the Month: Fear Itself #2
Events in general are overhyped. This issue just frankly bored the piss out of me. I mean that seriously; I had a wet stain in the crotchal region of my jeans after reading this. It just felt like nothing happened that mattered. It’s the Transformers 2 of summer event blockbusters as far as I am concerned. One giant, “So what?!”
Best New Book of the Month: Flashpoint #1
On the opposite side of Fear Itself is the first issue of DC’s summer event that we now know will lead into the reboot. I was not expecting much from this book and honestly was not too enthused to peruse it. Then I actually read the book and found I was dead wrong. I enjoyed the book and found the concepts introduced fun enough to actually make me excited for the next issue.
Best Cover of the Month: Batgirl #21 by Dustin Nguyen
Absolutely gorgeous. The stained glass is well done and overall Nguyen gives us what he usually gives us – a beautiful cover that you can take home to mother or, in some fanpeeps cases, mother’s basement. (I kid. I kid.) All the same it’s gorgeous, so take a peep.
Biggest News of the Month:
Really? Do I even need to tell you what this was? I’ll give you a hint. It’s being put out by DC and it rhymes with reboot.
Character Most Deserving of a Comeback: Maggott!
No, I am not kidding.
There you have it. Love my picks or hate them, they are what they are. Anything you felt was left off or was included erroneously? We (and I) would love to hear your thoughts. Until then, see ya’ll in a few months.
