The 31st annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were held last night at San Diego Comic-Con: writer Tom King won four awards for his work on titles like “Mister Miracle,” which also earned artist Mitch Gerads two awards. Jen Wang also took home two Eisners for her graphic novel “The Prince and the Dressmaker,” as did John Allison, Max Sarin, and Julia Madrigal, whose “Giant Days” won Best Continuing Series and Best Humor Publication. The evening also saw a tie in the category for Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism, with the award going to Back Issue! and PanelxPanel magazine.
Other winners of the evening included Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award recipient Lorena Alvarez (“Hicotea“), and the La Revisteria Comics store in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which won the Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. As previously announced, the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award was given to Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, publisher of the charity anthology “Ricanstruction,” and Thought Bubble founder Tula Lotay, while the Bill Finger Excellence In Comic Book Writing Award was given to Mike Friedrich and the late E. Nelson Bridwell (whose award was accepted by Paul Levitz). Levitz, José Luis García-López, Jenette Kahn, Wendy and Richard Pini, and Bill Sienkiewicz were voted into this year’s Hall of Fame, alongside the previously announced inductees Jim Aparo, June Tarpé Mills, Dave Stevens, and Morrie Turner.
