The world of “Black Hammer” is expanding yet again this March, when writer Jeff Lemire joins co-writer Ray Fawkes (“One Soul,” “Constantine”) and artist Matt Kindt (“Mind MGMT,” “Dept. H”) to launch “Black Hammer ’45.”
Joining the legion of miniseries and one-shots set in the “Black Hammer” world, “Black Hammer ’45” will introduce and follow the Black Hammer Squadron, who appear to be a cross between the Tuskegee Airmen and DC’s Blackhawks. According to SYFY Wire, the Black Hammer Squadron will take on Nazis, supernatural threats, and the dreaded Ghost Hunter, while homaging the war and superhero comics of the 1940s.
It’s not entirely surprising to see Lemire, Fawkes, and Kindt teaming up (along with co-collaborators Sharlene Kindt and Marie Enger), given their real-life friendship. But it’s worth noting that this is the first “Black Hammer” book Lemire isn’t writing solo, perhaps preparing himself to share the “Black Hammer” universe with others in the wake of last month’s film and TV deal with Legendary.
“Matt Kindt and Ray Fawkes are two of my best friends. They also happen to be two of my favorite creative forces on the planet Earth,” said Lemire, in a statement to SYFY Wire. “The idea of unleashing them as a team into the universe of ‘Black Hammer’ was way too much fun to pass up.”
You can find the first issue of “Black Hammer ’45,” which is slated as a four-issue miniseries, in stores March 6.
