With new comics being on pause right now, we have been trying to find interesting things to cover in lieu of just shutting down our reviews until new books resume. April marks the 28th anniversary of the launch of Image Comics with “Youngblood” #1, and so we thought we would celebrate the anniversary by looking back at the first three years of Image Comics.

Image is a fascinating company that is really multiple companies, run by creators, and one that has vastly different eras. The first three years are an era of concept and rapid expansion, with a ton of series starting, and almost as many flaming out for a variety of reasons. It is an era full of iconic characters and forgotten experiments. On a personal note, I was 10 when Image started, and so this era is also when I was at my first ‘peak’ in comics reading, and these books were incredibly exciting for a young reader who wasn’t use to seeing characters rip each other’s spines out.

So, for April 23, 24, and 30, we will be reviewing a variety of Image books from 1992-1995. We will also be doing special editions of some of our regular columns to coincide as well. So, read along, share some of your favorite Image memories with us, and here’s to 28 (at least) more years of Image Comics!

Homages to the superheroes of ages past are a regular feature of modern comics. Whether it’s “Mister Miracle” deconstructing Jack Kirby’s New Gods or “Pink Lemonade” creating a new Silver Age heroine in 2019, it is usually interesting to have artists recreate or re-imagine the characters and styles from comics’ history. “1963” is no exception.
